Can Down syndrome screening tell if the baby is a boy or a girl?

Can Down syndrome screening tell if the baby is a boy or a girl?

Whether to have a boy or a girl has always been a topic that we are more concerned about in our daily life. Because of the advanced medical technology nowadays, the gender of the baby in the belly can be known through B-ultrasound or Down syndrome screening. So, can the mom value of Down syndrome screening determine the gender of the baby?

Can the mom value of Down syndrome screening test the gender of a baby?

There are three indicators for Down syndrome screening: AFPHCGUE3. The first thing to look at is the MOM value of b-HCG:

Below 0.4, most of them are boys;

Above 1.0, most of them are girls;

It is close to between 0.4 and 1.0, which is the critical value range, and it is possible for both men and women.

Then, the combined binomial values (b-HCG and AFp) are more accurate:

Each indicator value has a mom value

1 When the AFP value is over 1 and the hcg is lower than 0.5, it is a boy;

2 When the AFP value is lower than 1 and the hcg value is higher than 1, the baby is a girl;

3 When the HCG value is between 0.5 and 1, and AFP is over 1, it is a boy, and AFP is under 1, it is a girl.

In addition, in the blood cells of Down syndrome children and Down syndrome positive children, regardless of whether the fetus is a boy or a girl, the b-HCG value is higher, but the AFp value is slightly lower.

When to do Down syndrome screening

Down syndrome screening is a necessary part of prenatal check-up. The prices of hospitals in different regions vary greatly, ranging from RMB 150 to RMB 200. Before Down syndrome screening, it is usually necessary to do a B-ultrasound to find out the specific gestational age of the fetus. Generally, there are many other tests that need to be done, not only this one, but also electrocardiogram, blood test, urine test and other new items.

Pregnant women with rural household registration are eligible for free examination under some policies, and the out-of-pocket price is not very expensive. This check is very important and mothers need to be proactive.

When a woman finds out she is pregnant, she needs to go to the hospital regularly for prenatal checkups, not only to understand the physical condition of the expectant mother, but also to know the growth and development of the fetus in real time. During the twelfth week of pregnancy, you need to check your weight, blood pressure, listen to the fetal heart rate, the size of the uterus, draw blood and urine for tests, and obtain past medical records. When the pregnancy reaches the second trimester, around the thirteenth to sixteenth week, Down syndrome screening should be carried out.

If it is discovered in time, it may be possible to correct it through early intervention and the child will be normal after birth.

Down syndrome screening mainly checks the blood cell markers of pregnant women, including the concentrations of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), human hcg gonadal hormone (β-hCG), free estriol (uE3) and inhibin A (InhibinA). Combining the pregnant woman's age, weight, gestational age and other information, a computer risk assessment is performed to obtain the risk index of Down syndrome in the baby carried by the pregnant woman.

If the test result shows a probability higher than the normal standard value, the result is positive, and amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling is needed for further diagnosis.
