Postpartum care for women is very important, but before that, the excretion of bad blood leakage is also a very important process. The excretion of bad blood leakage will also vary according to individual physical conditions, but the signs of adverse bad blood leakage are changing sanitary pads too frequently, accompanied by odor, and lower abdominal pain or fever, so special attention must be paid.

1. How many days does it take for lochia to be discharged after childbirth?

Since everyone's physique is different, there may be some slight differences in the time, and the time it takes for the lochia to clean up will also be different. Generally speaking, it can be cleaned up in about a month. The lochia time for women who have a cesarean section is longer than that for women who have a vaginal delivery.

Common lochia can be roughly divided into three types: bloody lochia, serous lochia, and white lochia, which appear at different times. Bloody lochia appears in the first few days after delivery. There is more blood in the lochia, so there will be red or dark red blood clots and a slight fishy smell. Afterwards, the color of the lochia will gradually fade and turn brown, which is called serous lochia. Later, the lochia will turn white or yellowish white, a bit similar to leucorrhea, called white lochia. At this time, the lochia is almost discharged.

2. Is it better to have more or less lochia after childbirth?

Lochia is the discharge of the uterine lining after a mother gives birth, and it contains blood, white blood cells, and epidermis. There is no direct statement about the amount of lochia that is good or bad, because there is no standard amount of lochia. The amount varies from person to person and is related to personal constitution.

If part of the placenta remains, the amount of lochia will generally be greater. The amount of lochia produced by caesarean section and natural birth is also different. In the first few days after delivery, the amount of lochia is relatively large. Normally, most of the lochia will be discharged within a week, and then there will be very little, and the color will also become lighter. It will no longer be bright red, but a little yellow. It may take half a month to twenty days to be completely discharged.

Please note that normal lochia only has a bloody smell but no foul odor, and the total amount is about 500~1000ML. If there is a foul odor, the uterus may be infected, so pay attention to hygiene. Mothers should observe the lochia, pay attention to changes in its quality and quantity, color and smell, as well as the state of uterine recovery, to understand whether the uterine recovery is normal.

3. Signs of bad lochia

Some new mothers may mistake lochia for menstruation, and believe that the flow will gradually decrease after a week. But in fact, prolonged lochia secretion can cause health problems. On the contrary, some mothers have only a vague understanding of lochia and think that a large amount of lochia is normal, which leads to late treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. The following situations will teach you how to identify the characteristics of bad lochia.

1. Changing pads too frequently

Normally, the amount of lochia will reach its maximum within one day after delivery. It is recommended to change the sanitary pad every hour. If replaced at this frequency, the amount of lochia will only occupy about one-third to one-half of the area of the sanitary pad. However, if within 1 hour, the lochia almost covers the entire sanitary pad and needs to be changed more than 2 to 3 times, or the flow exceeds 500 ml. , the mother should take the initiative to report to the doctor, because this may be a sign of postpartum hemorrhage.

2. Lochia with odor

Blood clots are actually a breeding ground for bacteria. If after delivery, blood clots and fetal membrane tissue are not discharged from the body quickly, but continue to accumulate in the uterus, they will cause bacterial infection and make the lochia have a foul odor.

3. Lower abdominal pain or fever

Some mothers after childbirth will have a fever due to inflammation of the endometrium, which is commonly known as puerperal fever. Doctors point out that if a pregnant woman's water breaks for too long during childbirth, it can easily cause uterine infection. Once the uterus is infected, the lochia will turn dark red and produce a foul odor, and the mother may also experience fever or lower abdominal pain. If you do not get enough rest, your resistance will deteriorate. In severe cases, surgical drainage may be required and you may need to continue hospitalization for observation and treatment.
