Breast pain during lactation is caused by these reasons!

It is a common phenomenon to feel tingling in the chest during breastfeeding. From a clinical point of view, it is directly related to nipple fissures, milk stasis, mastitis, nipple illusion, etc. In this case, new mothers must find the right cause and then treat it symptomatically to avoid the adverse effects of the tingling. In addition, new mothers must have enough sleep and a good attitude, otherwise it will be difficult to recover.

1. Nipple cracking

The nipple skin of a new breastfeeding mother is relatively delicate and cannot withstand the stimulation of the baby's sucking, especially when the milk supply is insufficient or the nipples are too small or inverted. As the baby sucks and bites the nipple hard, the nipple epidermis is soaked in saliva and becomes softened, peeled, and eroded, forming cracks of varying sizes. In addition, if the baby's nipple sucking posture is incorrect, or the mother cleans the nipple excessively, the nipple skin will become chapped. If the laceration is severe, the nipple may become ulcerated and secondarily infected, causing breast pain to the mother.

2. Milk stasis

Breast pain in lactating mothers may also be due to milk stasis. Some first-time mothers, especially those who have been pregnant for less than a month, cannot completely suck out the milk during each breastfeeding because their babies are still small. The mothers’ lack of knowledge about breast hygiene care can easily lead to milk stasis.

3. Mastitis

Breastfeeding mothers who suffer from mastitis may also experience breast pain. This is caused by blocked milk ducts, milk accumulation, direct bacterial invasion, or bacteria invading the milk ducts from cracks in the nipple or areola and infecting the mammary lobules along the lymphatic drainage ducts, causing the breasts to feel like being pricked by needles.

4. Nipple illusion

If a breastfeeding mother feels a tingling sensation in her breasts, it may also be a nipple illusion. If the baby is within one month of birth and the mother's milk production is low or the mother and baby are separated for various reasons, such as feeding the baby with milk from a bottle, the baby may no longer be willing to suck the mother's nipples. Forcing the baby to suck breast milk will cause discomfort in the mother's nipples.
