What should a breastfeeding mother do if she catches a cold?

Colds are very common diseases with a very high incidence rate, but for some people, colds are very troublesome. If a breastfeeding woman takes medication during the breastfeeding period, it will affect the milk, which will have a great impact on the baby's body. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers to take medicine when they catch a cold. So if you can’t take medicine blindly, what should a breastfeeding mother do if she catches a cold?

1. Isolation

If a mother catches a cold during breastfeeding, the first reaction is to separate the mother and the child in time, because the child's resistance is relatively low, and separation is to prevent the disease from being transmitted to the child; and the mother must not be anxious, adjust her mentality and enter the treatment process in time.

2. Get enough sleep

If it is a mild cold, the mother can try to get more rest, prioritize drinking water and ensure adequate sleep. At this time, because the mother is separated from the child and is being taken care of by other people, if she can quickly improve her resistance and recover by increasing rest, it will be a good thing for the child's breastfeeding and the mother.

3. Go to the hospital

If the cold is severe, the best way is to go to the hospital and have the doctor do some routine tests and determine the cause. Before the doctor prescribes medicine, be sure to inform him about breastfeeding in advance so that he can prescribe some relatively mild and easily metabolized medicines. Breastfeeding is prohibited at this time. The mother should pay attention to rest more and cooperate with medication, and must not forget to express and throw away the milk to ensure that the milk does not swell and does not affect milk production.

4. Reduce fever

If you have a cold and fever, you cannot assume that the fever can be reduced by simply using a cold towel and cold water. You need to find out the cause, whether it is caused by breast engorgement or a viral cold and fever. Only then should you seek treatment after the cause is determined. The use of medication at this time also requires caution. Follow the doctor's advice and resume breastfeeding your child normally two days after recovery.

5. Don’t overwork

Sometimes colds and illnesses can be avoided. When taking care of a child during the breastfeeding period, the mother should not be overworked. The task of coaxing the child can be appropriately handed over to family members. The mother needs to ensure diet and sleep. Preventing illness is the most important thing.
