What to do if pregnant women have chronic diarrhea

Pregnancy is in a special physiological period. Especially during this period, the diet cannot be as free as usual. Diarrhea is very easy to occur at this time. However, more caution is needed in treatment. The methods are introduced below.

Use antibiotics with caution

Many pregnant women take antibiotics immediately when they have diarrhea. However, do you know that antibiotics have potential teratogenic effects on the fetus? Especially the commonly used metronidazole, which has teratogenic effects on experimental animals and is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy. Other antibiotics, such as sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinolones, etc., have adverse effects on the mother or fetus and should also be banned. Erythromycin and ampicillin are safe for both mother and baby. Do not use opioids to stop diarrhea, because these drugs may cause bacterial overgrowth and repeated infections, which will aggravate diarrhea.

Proper hydration

Pregnant women should immediately replenish an appropriate amount of water after suffering from diarrhea. They can do so through porridge and soup, etc. This can restore the water and electrolytes, especially potassium ions, lost by pregnant women due to diarrhea. At the same time, eat some pastries to increase calories and physical energy and improve the ability to absorb water. It can speed up intestinal peristalsis and restore the intestines to normal.

Take more prebiotics

There are hundreds of millions of bacteria in the intestines, including harmful and beneficial bacteria! Diarrhea is caused by the imbalance of the flora inside. For special groups such as pregnant women, more attention should be paid to the balance of intestinal flora. Experts say that pregnant women who take more prebiotics, such as isomalto-oligosaccharides, on a daily basis can stimulate the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the intestines, thereby inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, improving intestinal immunity, and fundamentally curing diarrhea.
