What should I do if I have back pain after giving birth?

The problem of back pain in postpartum women is quite common. At this time, postpartum women should pay attention to understanding the correct nursing and prevention methods, adopt the correct breastfeeding posture, pay attention to calcium supplementation, and take care of the baby within their ability without overwork.

1. Use the correct breastfeeding posture

When feeding your baby, try to stay in a relaxed, comfortable position without any tension or pressure on your back. If you are breastfeeding in the side-lying position, you can lean your back against a pillow or cushion; if you choose to sit, it is better to sit on a low stool (if the chair is high, you can put a small stool under your feet), lean your body against the back of the chair, and it is best to put a pillow or small cushion on your knees to lift the baby.

2. Ensure calcium intake

During pregnancy, most expectant mothers are very concerned about the issue of "calcium supplementation". However, once the baby is born, "calcium supplementation" is put aside, and milk production becomes the top priority of all work. In fact, new mothers who are breastfeeding need more calcium than those in late pregnancy! This not only relates to whether the calcium content in breast milk is sufficient, but is also an important reason why many new mothers experience back pain! The amount of calcium needed in early pregnancy is 800 mg/day, 1000 to 1200 mg/day in mid-to-late pregnancy, and 1500 mg/day during lactation. In addition, when taking calcium, you should also pay attention to taking an appropriate amount of vitamin D to help calcium absorption.

3. Do housework in moderation

When ironing clothes, you can sit down; when using a vacuum cleaner or mopping the floor, you can adopt the fencer's posture (take a small step forward with one foot and bend your knees) to keep your waist straight; try to avoid lifting heavy objects. If you must lift them, divide the items evenly into two bags, place them on both sides of the body, bend your knees (not bend over) and squat to lift the heavy objects.

4. Take care of your baby within your ability

New mothers tend to take good care of their babies and enjoy the intimate feeling of holding their babies. However, if you hold your baby in one position for a long time, it is likely to cause strain on local joint ligaments and muscles. So, remember to change your posture frequently. In addition, the time of holding the baby should not be too long.
