What is the cause of maternal skin itching?

Postpartum skin itching is often a disease that bothers most people. However, this phenomenon is mostly concentrated on stretch marks and inner thighs. The high-risk group is mothers who are giving birth to their first child. So what causes it?

There are several different situations of postpartum skin itching, and different people may be troubled by itching caused by different reasons:

1. Papules.

The cause of this rash is still unknown. Some literature points out that prurigo is closely related to the formation of stretch marks, and it is more common in women who gain more weight during pregnancy. Most of the cases occur in pregnant women who are giving birth to their first child. Generally speaking, it will disappear naturally within 1-3 months after delivery.

2. Urticaria.

There are many causes of urticaria, some are caused by food or drugs, while others are related to emotional stress.

(1) Eating food containing rice wine: Because Chinese people have the custom of confinement after childbirth, they will be exposed to some foods that they rarely eat in normal times. In particular, people in the south often eat food containing rice wine, which can make urticaria worse.

(2) Stress: Physical weakness plus the emotional stress of taking care of a baby can cause changes in physical constitution, making urticaria difficult to control.

3. Hidradenitis.

It is commonly known as prickly heat. Traditionally, you are not allowed to take a bath during the confinement period. In order to prevent mothers from catching cold, they often have to wrap their bodies tightly. When the sweat glands' sweating function is blocked, they are prone to inflammation.

4. Microbacterial infection.

The most common one is pityriasis versicolor, which is also caused by the postpartum confinement period, inability to take a bath, stuffiness and excessive sweating. It usually occurs in the wrinkles of the torso, armpits, neck, etc. where sweat accumulates easily.

5. Local skin eczema.

The most common are hand eczema and areola eczema. It is also best sent to new mothers.
