What are the reasons for high risk of Down syndrome screening?

The high risk of Down syndrome screening is often caused by chromosomal abnormalities. During pregnancy, if the pregnant woman is older or is affected by environmental pollution, the incidence of fetal malformations may increase.

1. The main reason for high risk in Down syndrome screening is chromosomal. A woman's primordial germ cells are formed during the fetal period. If pregnancy occurs too late, the eggs are more likely to be polluted by the environment, and the ovarian function begins to decline, making it easy for the egg chromosomes to age, ultimately leading to an increased incidence of teratogenesis.

2. Experts point out that a high-risk result in Down syndrome screening only means that the fetus has a high chance of suffering from Down syndrome, but it does not mean that the fetus will definitely have Down syndrome or be deformed. Pregnant mothers whose Down syndrome screening results are "high risk" need to confirm whether the fetus has Down syndrome. A positive Down syndrome screening result indicates that there is a certain risk that the fetus is a "Down syndrome baby". Amniocentesis should be performed as soon as possible for prenatal diagnosis to confirm whether the fetus is abnormal. Once any abnormality is discovered, the pregnancy should be terminated promptly.

3. Currently, prenatal screening is widely carried out in most areas of my country. However, due to the lack of health knowledge of some pregnant women and the incomplete or inaccurate information and data they provide, prenatal screening may result in missed screenings and misdiagnosis. We must first have a good attitude to accept the test results, and we should not rely solely on one test to determine the results. For the sake of health and safety, it is recommended to do more tests and comprehensive assessments.
