Erythromycin ointment for nipple cracks

Erythromycin ointment for nipple cracks

Many women, especially those who are breastfeeding, will have cracked nipples. This is also a kind of female gynecological disease. Most of them are caused by acute mastitis. It may be because the baby uses too much force when feeding milk, which causes nipple damage. Nipple cracks can make women feel pain. Some ointments can be used to relieve the pain. So can erythromycin ointment be used for nipple cracks?

Common causes of cracked nipples:

1. Nipple hypoplasia, inverted nipples or nipples that are too small, breastfeeding difficulties, nipple damage caused by excessive force when the baby sucks milk

2. Excessive milk secretion and long-term milk overflow can cause erosion or eczema on the nipple and surrounding skin.

3. Wrong breastfeeding posture causes friction and squeezing of the nipple. The baby is not proficient in sucking milk and bites the nipple.

4. Reasons for the development of the baby's oral cavity: I once met a baby with cleft lip who often sucked his mother's nipple.

The main symptoms of nipple fissures

There are small cracks and/or ulcers on the skin over the nipple that bleed. The nipple and its surrounding areas are rich in blood vessels and nerves. When nipple cracks occur, the baby's sucking will cause knife-like pain in the nipple. The pain may force the mother to reduce the frequency of breastfeeding, which will increase the risk of milk stasis. When bacteria invade through the damaged nipple along the lymphatic vessels, the milk accumulated in the breast will become an excellent base for bacterial reproduction, which will lead to bacterial mastitis.

Treatments for cracked nipples include:

1. During pregnancy, pay attention to the cleanliness of the nipples. Inverted nipples can be corrected by gently pulling;

2. Before breastfeeding, apply hot and wet compresses to the breasts and nipples for 3 to 5 minutes to soften the areola and make it easier for the baby to suck. Breastfeeding should adopt a comfortable and correct feeding posture. During breastfeeding, the position of holding the baby can be changed alternately so that the sucking force is dispersed around the nipple and areola.

3. When breastfeeding, you should start with the breast that is less painful to reduce the sucking force on the other breast, and let the nipple and part of the areola be sucked in the baby's mouth to prevent the nipple skin from becoming more chapped.

4. Develop good breastfeeding habits, learn the correct breastfeeding method, do not let the baby sleep with the nipple in the mouth, clean the nipple before and after breastfeeding, and pay attention to the baby's oral hygiene habits;

5. For those with chapped cheeks, erythromycin ointment, Bactroban, etc. can be used to promote healing and relieve pain. For severe cases, breastfeeding can be suspended for 1-2 days, but the milk should be expressed and the baby should be fed with a bottle or spoon.
