Will obesity cause amenorrhea?

In real life, some overweight women may have menstrual problems to varying degrees, and some female friends even have amenorrhea. Of course, obesity itself may lead to amenorrhea, but it should be noted that some friends may be suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome. At this time, they are not only overweight, but also have symptoms of amenorrhea. So when we have the problem of amenorrhea, we should not just blame it on obesity, but also go to the hospital for a physical examination.

It is generally believed that a weight that is 15% above the standard weight is called obesity. Obesity can be divided into external and internal types. The most common cause of external obesity is overeating and lack of exercise. Intrinsic obesity is mainly caused by endocrine disorders, and the most direct manifestation in women is menstrual disorders. This menstrual disorder can be manifested as dark purple menstrual blood, scanty menstrual flow, and even amenorrhea. A weight that is 20% above the standard weight is called obesity. If there is no abnormality in the central nervous system and no defects in other endocrine systems, it is simple obesity. Women with simple obesity often suffer from menstrual disorders, which are often manifested as dysfunctional uterine bleeding or secondary amenorrhea. Someone surveyed 100 patients with menstrual disorders, of whom 43% were obese.

Another long-term follow-up study of 32 obese amenorrhea patients found that weight loss can restore normal menstruation, while none of the women who could not lose weight resumed menstruation and remained amenorrhea. The causes of menstrual disorders and amenorrhea in women with simple obesity are still unclear, but may be related to metabolic defects or high levels of androgen in the body. Losing weight while treating menstruation can improve the efficacy and even restore menstruation to normal.

Through the above introduction, friends have discovered that obesity can actually lead to amenorrhea. Of course, sometimes it is the body that is ill after all. In addition to those with polycystic ovary syndrome, amenorrhea may also occur if the patient has lesions in the hypothalamus, or if a person engages in strenuous physical exercise for a long time. In addition, genetic defects or the use of certain medications can cause menstrual dysfunction in patients and eventually lead to amenorrhea.
