What is the reason for the fishy smell of postpartum lochia?

What is the reason for the fishy smell of postpartum lochia?

It will take about three weeks for a woman to expel lochia after giving birth. After these three weeks, the lochia has basically been expelled. However, sometimes some women will expel lochia with a fishy smell, or lochia that looks like rotten flesh. These are abnormal phenomena and may indicate local or systemic infection. At this time, it is best to go to the hospital for a detailed examination and take treatment measures as soon as possible.

Lochia is the secretion discharged from the vagina after childbirth. It takes about three weeks for new mothers to expel lochia from their bodies after giving birth. Lochia: Generally in the first few days after delivery, the amount of lochia is relatively large and the color is bright red, so it is also called red lochia or bloody lochia; the amount of blood will decrease 3 to 5 days after delivery, and the color of lochia will become light red, so it is called serum lochia; 10 to 14 days after delivery. The color of lochia will change to white or light yellow, so it is called white lochia. Normal lochia will have a bloody smell and is odorless, and will be discharged about 3 weeks after delivery. The lochia of new mothers who have a caesarean section will last longer than that of mothers who have a vaginal birth. In medicine, changes in the quality, quantity, color, and smell of lochia are often observed to determine whether the uterus has recovered normally.

Qi deficiency type lochia: Clinical manifestations include prolonged lochia, light color, large amount, no odor, a feeling of emptiness in the lower abdomen, fatigue, shortness of breath and laziness to speak, pale tongue with white coating, pale complexion, and slow and weak pulse. Improvement method: Take Buzhong Yiqi Pills to replenish qi and blood, 1 pill each time, with moxa leaves (12 grams) as an inducer, decocted into a soup and taken, 2 to 3 times a day. You can also take Wu Ji Bai Feng Pills, 1 pill each time, 2 to 3 times a day, with warm water.

In traditional Chinese medicine, if a woman is weak after giving birth, it is easy for her to have persistent lochia, and the lochia may have a fishy smell. Some female friends may lose too much blood after giving birth, which causes too much loss of vaginal fluid in the body, resulting in incomplete discharge of lochia. It should be noted that friends whose lochia has a fishy smell may have their infection aggravated and may induce sepsis.
