How is vaginal adenocarcinoma treated?

Vaginal adenocarcinoma is actually a rare vaginal malignant tumor, but this disease is common in young women, so female friends must pay attention to prevention. Treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

1. Surgery

Treatment of vaginal adenocarcinoma is similar to that of vaginal squamous cell carcinoma. Because vaginal clear cell gonadotropin-related carcinomas with a history of intrauterine diethylstilbestrol exposure occur in younger women and are diagnosed at a younger age, every treatment must preserve vaginal and ovarian function. For small stage I patients, adequate local excision, retroperitoneal lymph node resection and local radiotherapy can achieve better results.

2. Radiation therapy

Patients in stage I should receive intratissue implant radiotherapy or vaginal plug radiotherapy. In addition to the above treatment, patients in stage II should also receive full pelvic irradiation to achieve a tumor base dose of 75 to 80 Gy. When patients with more advanced disease undergo whole pelvic irradiation, ovarian transposition can be performed before starting treatment to protect ovarian function. Radiation therapy is often used for patients with advanced or recurrent disease.

3. Chemotherapy

No effective chemotherapy drug has been found. Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) and cyclophosphamide are commonly used. Fluorouracil (5-FU) and vinblastine have certain therapeutic effects on recurrent cases.
