Breast Conserving Surgery for Breast Cancer

Breast Conserving Surgery for Breast Cancer

With the advancement of medical technology, most breast cancer patients can still have a newborn through surgical treatment at the beginning of diagnosis. In addition, at this stage in clinical medicine, surgical treatment is the basic first choice for treating breast cancer. Take a look below

Is it better to conserve the breast or remove all of it during breast cancer surgery?

Surgical treatment of breast cancer can be roughly divided into two types: breast-conserving surgery and non-breast-conserving surgery. Under normal circumstances, the doctor will determine the appropriate surgical treatment method based on the patient's actual condition and surgical intention.

To put it simply, breast-conserving surgery is actually to remove the tumor and part of the glandular duct of the patient's breast, but it will preserve the entire breast or most of it.

Non-breast-conserving surgery actually means removing the entire breast, including the breast skin, subcutaneous tissue, glandular ducts, nipple-nipple complex, etc.; at the same time, the axillary lymph nodes need to be cleaned, and the pectoralis major muscle fascia may also be removed.

Many people will experience a lack of self-confidence after breast-conserving surgery. In fact, for patients who have undergone non-breast-conserving surgery, if they have the desire for breast repair or reconstruction, breast repair and reconstruction can actually be performed, which can help patients finally regain confidence.

Since the choice of non-breast-conserving surgery or breast-conserving surgery in breast cancer treatment is mostly based on the patient's condition and surgical intention, then, can every breast cancer choose surgical treatment?

Not every patient diagnosed with breast cancer can be treated with surgery. Surgical treatment needs to comprehensively consider the actual stage analysis of breast cancer patients, as well as the patient's overall physical condition at that time. In clinical medicine, only breast cancer patients in TNM stage 0, I, II and some stage III who have no contraindications to surgery can be treated with surgical methods.

If the size of the breast cancer lump is consistent with the breast proportion standard, that is, the lump is relatively small, isolated, and far away from the nipple, and the tumor cells have not invaded the muscles and skin, the patient's preferences and health status can be considered to choose breast-conserving surgery.

However, if breast cancer patients no longer meet the criteria for breast-conserving surgery at the time of diagnosis, such patients are recommended to undergo non-breast-conserving surgery and restore their femininity through breast repair or reconstruction.
