Early treatment methods for uterine fibroids

Early treatment methods for uterine fibroids

Clinically, although uterine fibroids are a common benign tumor in women, if they are not treated promptly and effectively, they may worsen. Therefore, it is very important for female friends to understand the early treatment methods of uterine fibroids. Let us now learn about the treatment methods that should be used in the early stages of uterine fibroids.

1. Expectant treatment

It is suitable for patients with small fibroids, no symptoms, no complications, no degeneration, and no impact on health. For perimenopausal patients without clinical symptoms, it is considered that ovarian dysfunction may cause the fibroids to regress or shrink. All of the above situations can be treated with expectant management, that is, regular follow-up observations in clinical and imaging aspects (once every 3 to 6 months). The treatment will be decided based on the review results.

2. Drug treatment

The basis of drug treatment is that uterine fibroids are sex hormone-dependent tumors, so drugs that antagonize sex hormones are used for treatment. Newly used drugs are those that temporarily suppress the ovaries. Danazol and cottonpol are commonly used drugs in China. Other androgens, progestins, and vitamins are also used.

3. Surgical treatment

1. Myomectomy: The uterus is opened, the myoma is removed from the pseudocapsule, and then the uterus is sutured. The uterus is preserved, so that the patient can still have menstruation after surgery, and the uterus's reproductive function is preserved; the female internal reproductive organs and their blood supply and function are preserved. However, there is a possibility of recurrence of fibroids after surgery. For some patients, laparoscopic myomectomy can be performed according to the specific situation.

2. Radical hysterectomy is the most traditional and classic surgical approach for uterine fibroids. The uterine body and/or cervix are removed, while one or both adnexa are retained. Both ovaries can also be removed at the same time. This procedure is suitable for any disease that requires hysterectomy, especially for patients with cervical lesions, and can reduce the occurrence of cervical stump cancer. However, postoperative vaginal shortening and relaxation of the pelvic floor ligaments may cause pain during sexual intercourse.

Generally speaking, the early stage treatment of uterine fibroids is best determined according to the progression of the patient's condition. The three methods mentioned in the article, namely expectant therapy, drug therapy and surgical treatment, have significant effects on the early treatment of uterine fibroids and are also treatment options for patients with early uterine fibroids.
