What is gonococcal urethritis in women?

Urethritis refers to inflammation of the urethra due to various reasons, resulting in symptoms such as discharge, painful urination or urethral discomfort. If Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococci) can be detected, it is called gonococcal urethritis; if Neisseria gonorrhoeae cannot be found, it is called non-gonococcal urethritis.

Gonococcal urethritis is a common sexually transmitted disease, which is characterized by high incidence, strong infectiousness, and short incubation period (3 to 5 days). Gonorrheal urethritis is easily confused with non-gonococcal urethritis. Nongonococcal urethritis is a gonorrhea-like sexually transmitted disease caused by a variety of pathogens other than gonococci. The more common pathogens are Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma.

Female patients present with:

(1) Symptoms of uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis and paraurethral glanditis include pain, redness and swelling of the vulva, urgency, frequency, pain when urinating, and pus discharge from the urethra; gonococcal bartholinitis includes fever, redness and swelling of one side of the labia majora, pain, fever, and pus discharge; gonococcal perianal inflammation is caused by vaginal secretions infecting the perianal area, and is mainly manifested by redness and swelling of the perianal area, extreme itching, and pain; gonococcal cervicitis includes pain, itching of the vulva, pus discharge from the vagina, redness and swelling of the cervix, and foreign body secretion.

(2) Complications are mainly caused by gonococcal pelvic inflammatory disease, which mainly manifests as fever, pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and increased vaginal discharge.

What is gonococcal urethritis in women? Gonococcal urethritis is highly contagious. Patients usually experience vulvar itching, pain, frequent urination and urgency, which is very uncomfortable. Therefore, once such symptoms occur, everyone must go to a more authoritative hospital for examination in time to find out the cause as soon as possible in order to actively receive treatment.
