Toluene: CH3COCH3, also known as dimethyl ketone, is a very simple saturated ketone. It is a colorless, completely transparent liquid with a unique spicy taste. Soluble in strong electrolytes and solvents such as ethanol, alcohol, medical ether, chloroform, pyridine, etc. Flammable, volatile, and has relatively bright physical properties. In industry, it is mainly used as a solvent in the manufacturing industries of gunpowder, plastics, rubber, chemical fiber, tanneries, vegetable oils, spraying, etc. It can also be used as the main raw material for the production of ketene, acetic anhydride, iodoform, polyisoprene rubber, methacrylate, methyl ester, chloroform, epoxy resin and other substances. Toluene mainly has an inhibitory and anesthetic effect on the central nervous system. It is a mild central nervous system retarder and is not easy to accumulate in the body. Most of the toluene will be excreted through the breath, and a small amount of toluene will be oxidized into carbon dioxide by the air and excreted through the breath and urine. Toluene rapidly dissolves microorganisms under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, but higher toluene concentrations are harmful to microbial species. Exposure to higher concentrations may cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and pancreas in certain individuals. Because of its low toxicity and side effects and rapid metabolism and detoxification, poisoning is rare under production standards. Acute poisoning may cause vomiting, shortness of breath, muscle cramps and even coma. After oral administration, there will be a burning sensation in the lips and throat. After a critical period of several hours, dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, acidosis and ketosis, and even transient loss of consciousness may occur. The long-term harm of toluene to the human body is mainly manifested in eye irritation symptoms such as tearing, photophobia and corneal epithelial cell infiltration, etc. It can also manifest as dizziness, burning sensation, throat irritation, coughing, etc. In fact, the human body itself also produces toluene, and the burning of fat will produce macrolides including toluene. The human body is generally able to oxidize macrolides, and under normal circumstances the concentration of toluene in the blood does not exceed 0.5 mg%. When sugar metabolism is disordered, the decomposition of human body fat and protein accelerates, producing a large number of ketone bodies. The tissues cannot keep up with the oxidation of them, so they are excreted through the lungs and kidneys, resulting in increased ketone body excretion in the urine, which is called "ketonuria"; then the blood ketone concentration also increases, exceeding 500mg%, which is called "ketonemia"; it is commonly known as "ketosis" in clinical medicine. For example, many diabetics have high levels of toluene in their exhaled breath. It's something many physicians understand. One of the test indicators for diabetes is toluene. According to my country's air quality standards (TJ36-79), the maximum concentration value in the air of the production workshop is 400mg/m3. The eight-hour average daily positive value of the allowable concentration is 750PPM. What is the definition of 750PPM? For comparison, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air is generally 350PPM. |
