Granulation tissue is a kind of immature connective tissue, which is composed of cells, extracellular matrix and abundant capillaries, and collagen fibers are its main components. After the dermis is damaged, fibroblasts secrete a large amount of collagen, elastin, fibronectin and glycosaminoglycans, and synthesize a large amount of collagen fibers. While fibroblasts synthesize collagen, collagenase continuously decomposes collagen, but at this time, synthesis is greater than decomposition. With the massive production of collagen and the proliferation of capillary buds, granulation tissue gradually forms and continuously fills the wound cavity. As the cavity is filled, the granulation tissue matures, the fibroblasts in it turn into fibrocytes, the capillaries are blocked, disappear, and the number decreases. Finally, the newly formed granulation tissue becomes a fibrous connective tissue lacking blood vessels, dull in color, hard, and mainly composed of collagen, and scar tissue is formed.
