Eating a bowl of high-fiber cereal may help prevent type 2 diabetes and other health problems. Eating high-fiber cereal can reduce insulin production and lower blood sugar in men with hyperinsulinemia, a new study shows.

The researchers believe that by reducing elevated insulin and blood sugar levels after a high-carbohydrate meal, people at risk for diabetes can avoid the disease and its complications; other studies have shown that exercise and diabetes drugs may also protect these people from developing diabetes.

The study, published in the journal Nature, compared the results of eating high-fiber or low-fiber ready-to-eat breakfast cereals in 77 men without diabetes. The results showed that 42% of the men had elevated insulin levels.

Men with hyperinsulinemia are significantly heavier, have wider waist circumferences, and have lower HDL cholesterol. Being overweight is one of the biggest risk factors for diabetes, and people at risk of diabetes often have low HDL cholesterol. Studies have shown that eating high-fiber cereals can significantly reduce blood sugar levels compared to eating low-fiber cereals; in addition, hyperinsulinemic men who ate high-fiber cereals had significantly reduced insulin production.
