How long does it take to get your period after breastfeeding?

After giving birth, a woman needs to stay in confinement for a period of time. During this period, she should pay attention to her lifestyle habits, avoid catching cold, and do not wash her hair. During the confinement period, as the body recovers, the mother may experience menstruation. This is a normal phenomenon and there is no need to worry. During the confinement period, many pregnant women begin breastfeeding their fetuses, which is a good habit. So, how long will it take for a mother to get her period while breastfeeding?

1. Is it normal to have menstruation during breastfeeding?

After giving birth, the resumption of menstruation and the timing of ovulation will be affected by breastfeeding. If the mother is not breastfeeding, she will usually have her period 6-10 weeks after giving birth. If a mother is breastfeeding, the resumption of menstruation will be a little late. Some mothers may not have menstruation at all during the breastfeeding period. This depends on each person's individual situation.

However, there is a phenomenon worth noting, that is, the first menstrual-like vaginal bleeding after childbirth is regarded as menstruation by many mothers. In fact, through basal body temperature measurement, 60% of them are anovulatory. Strictly speaking, it is anovulatory menstruation, which cannot be regarded as real menstruation. The amount of bleeding and duration are much longer than normal menstruation, and the menstrual cycle is also irregular. Therefore, many mothers will have abnormal menstruation for a period of time after giving birth.

So, now that we know that menstruation during breastfeeding is a normal phenomenon, moms can rest assured!

2. Can I still breastfeed if I have my period during breastfeeding?

However, many mothers are also worried: Can they still breastfeed well if they have their period during breastfeeding? There is a folk saying that if menstruation comes during breastfeeding, breast milk will no longer be nutritious and may even be toxic to the baby, so weaning is necessary. But is this really the case?

The idea that you cannot breastfeed while menstruating is actually unscientific. Under normal circumstances, the quality of breast milk is best from 11 days to 4 months after delivery. After menstruation, breast milk is more concentrated than usual, containing less fat and more protein. This kind of breast milk sometimes causes indigestion symptoms in infants, but this is a temporary phenomenon and will return to normal after the menstrual period. Moreover, this kind of breast milk is not harmful to the baby and you can still breastfeed the baby.

If you still want to give your baby the best breast milk during menstruation, in order to avoid breast milk concentration and changes in composition, mothers can pay more attention to diet, drink more boiled water, eat more fish, milk, poultry and vegetable soup, etc. There is no need to wean the baby even if menstruation starts 4 months after delivery. If the milk supply is not enough, you can add supplementary foods such as milk and rice cereal. If menstruation comes 8 months after delivery, you can consider weaning your baby, gradually reduce the number of breastfeeding times, and increase the amount of complementary foods.
