The decarboxylase produced by anaerobic bacteria can stimulate Gardnerella to produce certain amino acids, resulting in volatile amines, which release an unpleasant fishy smell. Amines increase the pH value and inhibit the reproduction of lactobacilli. The vaginal epidermal cells that are attached to bacteria fall off, increasing vaginal secretions, thus leading to this disease. Due to the disorder of flora, vaginal inflammation is not obvious, and the white blood cells in the secretions are reduced. Therefore, bacterial vaginosis is more appropriately called vaginitis than vaginitis.

Common complications include gynecological cervicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and often Trichomonas vaginitis. It has been reported that 86% of women with positive Trichomonas culture have this disease.
