Mifepristone tablets for the treatment of uterine fibroids

Uterine fibroids are one of the most common gynecological diseases in our lives. Its treatment is often through surgical removal of the uterus, which is very harmful to the body, especially for non-pregnant women. In severe cases, it may cause women to lose their fertility. Therefore, it is very important for female friends to treat diseases such as uterine fibroids. However, mifepristone tablets are a common drug for us. Does it have a certain effect on uterine fibroids? Let's learn about the treatment of uterine fibroids with mifepristone tablets.

Mifepristone tablets for the treatment of uterine fibroids

Although uterine fibroids have been considered estrogen-related tumors for many years, recent studies have shown that progesterone plays an important role in the generation and growth of uterine fibroids. As a progesterone antagonist, mifepristone not only antagonizes progesterone, but also blocks the vasodilator effect of progesterone in uterine fibroids. Therefore, mifepristone can significantly reduce the size of uterine fibroids.

The research report shows that after taking 5 mg of mifepristone daily for 3 months, the size of the uterus and uterine fibroids decreased, and the levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body decreased significantly. Serum progesterone dropped to the menopausal level; serum estradiol also dropped significantly, maintaining at the early or mid-follicular level, but higher than the menopausal level; there were no significant changes in serum follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone after medication. This indicates that low-dose mifepristone does not significantly suppress pituitary gonadotropin, and ovulation resumes about 2 weeks after drug discontinuation. Therefore, patients were in a state of amenorrhea during mifepristone treatment, and menstruation resumed 20 to 30 days after stopping the drug. According to literature reports, long-term oral administration of low-dose mifepristone has no significant effect on blood lipids, liver and kidney function, and electrolytes, and it is believed that mifepristone is safe for the treatment of uterine fibroids.

The results of the study showed that the total effective rate of mifepristone tablets in treating uterine fibroids was 79.84%, which enabled peri-menopausal patients to transition to natural menopause ahead of schedule, and the fibroids continued to shrink, thus avoiding surgery. Mifepristone is an ideal drug for the treatment of uterine fibroids, and is more effective for patients with small fibroids. During the treatment of uterine fibroids with mifepristone, the development of the endometrium is blocked and the patient is in a state of amenorrhea. After treatment, the hemoglobin level increases to varying degrees, anemia is corrected, and pelvic congestion is relieved. Therefore, it is believed that for patients with larger uterine fibroids and severe anemia, one course of mifepristone can be used first to create conditions for surgery and then perform surgery after the anemia is corrected. This can reduce intraoperative bleeding, avoid blood transfusions, and reduce the difficulty of surgery.

The above is an introduction to the treatment of uterine fibroids with mifepristone tablets. After understanding it, we know that although it has a certain effect on uterine fibroids, friends with uterine fibroids should not blindly take mifepristone tablets. They must go to a regular specialist hospital for treatment and listen to the doctor's advice. After all, everyone's physical condition and disease condition are different, and blindly taking drugs will cause certain harm to the body.
