Seven reasons why women have chloasma

Chloasma is the "archenemy" of women who love beauty. When they find themselves with ugly chloasma, many people will think of applying whitening skin care products, or using foundation, BB cream, etc. to cover it up. This is only a temporary solution and does not address the root cause. The most important thing is to find out the cause of melasma. Let’s take a look at the seven reasons why women are prone to melasma.

1. What is melasma?

Melasma is a common pigmentation skin disease occurring on the face. Irregular menstruation, oral contraceptives, and excessive psychological stress may all induce chloasma. The characteristics of chloasma are: symmetrical distribution on the face, especially on the cheeks, forehead, nose, lips and chin; the patches are brown, dark brown or light black, of varying sizes and shapes, isolated or fused into patches, with clear boundaries, and generally butterfly-shaped. Chloasma can occur in both men and women, but is more common in women.

2. Seven reasons why women tend to have chloasma

One of the reasons: smoking, drinking, staying up late, computer radiation

Smoking, drinking, looking at the computer for a long time, having an inverted work and rest schedule, or long-term lack of sleep can all trigger the formation of chloasma.

Suggestions and countermeasures: Smoke and drink less, avoid spending long periods of time in front of the computer and staying up late, and get enough sleep.

Reason 2: Not taking proper sun protection measures

When a large amount of ultraviolet rays directly radiate human skin, in order to prevent skin cells from being oxidized, the human body secretes a large amount of melanin to protect them, which leads to pigmentation and the formation of dark spots. Ultraviolet radiation can activate tyrosinase activity, increase the proliferation and activity of melanocytes, accelerate melanin synthesis, and cause facial pigmentation.

Recommendations and countermeasures: People who are prone to melasma should try to reduce sun exposure or strengthen sun protection, such as using a parasol or applying sunscreen, and avoid exposure to the sun between 10 am and 4 pm (especially in summer).

Reason three: Abuse of bad cosmetics

Some women use a lot of makeup for years. The harmful ingredients contained in cosmetics, such as preservatives, bactericides, metals, pigments and fragrances, can accumulate over a long period of time and lead to a series of skin diseases, chloasma being one of them. The consequences of long-term use of bad cosmetics are even more serious.

Suggestions and countermeasures: Women should wear less makeup as much as possible, or choose cosmetics containing natural or organic ingredients.

Reason 4: Excessive psychological pressure

If you are under stress for a long time, your body's metabolism will slow down, the nutrients needed by the skin will be insufficient, the pigment cells will become more active, and the melasma will grow more and more.

Suggestions and countermeasures: Keep a good mood, avoid anxiety and sorrow, and choose effective stress-relieving measures, such as exercise, listening to music, and finding someone to talk to, etc. These will all help prevent and treat chloasma.

Reason 5: pregnancy spots

Women are prone to chloasma when they are 3-5 months pregnant, so it is also called "pregnancy spots". The cause of facial pigmentation may be the combined action of estrogen and progesterone, which stimulate melanocytes. Progesterone promotes the transport and diffusion of melanosomes and increases the production of melanin.

Suggestions and countermeasures: Most melasma caused by pregnancy will gradually fade away after delivery, so there is no need to worry too much.

Reason 6: Chronic diseases

Most women suffering from reproductive system diseases such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, adnexitis, infertility, etc. can cause chloasma, which are mainly caused by endocrine disorders. In addition, chronic gastrointestinal diseases, hyperthyroidism, liver disease, tuberculosis, tumors, etc. can also cause chloasma.

Suggestions and countermeasures: The primary disease should be treated actively.

Reason 7: Long-term use of certain medications

Chlorpromazine, phenytoin sodium, hibernation spirit, spironolactone, etc. can all induce the occurrence of chloasma, but the specific mechanism is still unclear. In addition, people who take oral contraceptives are also prone to chloasma. Among women who use oral contraceptives, the incidence of melasma is around 29%, regardless of whether they take them continuously or intermittently.

Recommendations and countermeasures: People with drug-induced chloasma should use the drugs reasonably under the guidance of a doctor and switch to other drugs if necessary.
