How to self-examine breast disease

How to self-examine breast disease

Yuan Peng, professor of internal medicine at the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, pointed out that for women with normal menstruation, the best time to do breast self-examination is between the 9th and 11th day after the onset of menstruation. At this time, the effect of estrogen on the breast is minimal, the breast is in a relatively static state, and lesions are easier to detect. For middle-aged and elderly women after menopause, the effect of endocrine hormones is relatively weakened due to the decrease of estrogen in their bodies, so they can choose the time for self-examination at will.

Check 1: Use the fingertips of one hand to press clockwise from the nipple and make a circular spiral

Slide and gradually make three or four circles outwards. Switch to the other side.

Check 2: Lie flat on your back, place a pillow under your right shoulder, bend your right hand and place it under the pillow, do Check 1 with your left hand, then switch to the other side.

Examination 3: Check whether the lymph nodes in the armpit are swollen, and then squeeze the nipple with the thumb and index finger to see if there is any abnormal secretion.

The correct method for breast self-examination is to use your palm or fingers together to gently touch the breast. Otherwise, it is easy to mistake normal breast tissue for a lump. And don't forget to check the armpits and clavicle, because some hyperplastic tissue may be found not only in the breasts, but also around the breasts. If any abnormality is found, seek medical attention immediately.

The best time to do a self-examination is when you are bathing, especially after applying shower gel, as your hands can easily move on the lubricated skin. Check in front of a mirror to see if your breasts are symmetrical. You can also do a self-examination by lying flat on your back with your shoulders slightly raised and gently pressing the skin with your hands.
