Reading books at close range for a long time at school and looking at mobile phone screens immediately after school has become the daily life of most middle and high school students. However, this lifestyle is quietly posing a threat to vision health. Recently, the Strabismus and Pediatric Ophthalmology Department of Anxi Aier Eye Hospital received a 16-year-old patient with strabismus due to long-term and excessive use of the eyes at close range. Xiaoqi received treatment at the Ophthalmology Hospital and finally got rid of the double vision problem. Xiaoqi, a 16-year-old girl from the tea village, found that something was wrong with her eyes since July 2024, with double vision and dizziness. After excluding brain diseases, Xiaoqi went to Anxi Aier Eye Hospital for treatment. After asking Xiaoqi about her daily eye habits, Director Wang Yanyu learned that she usually kept her mobile phone in her hand when she returned home from school. She liked to watch short videos, read novels, and even stay up late to play with her mobile phone for up to four hours. After a comprehensive examination, Xiaoqi was diagnosed with acute common alternating esotropia caused by long-term close-range eye use. Dr. Wang Yanyu examines Xiaoqi's eyes Dr. Wang Yanyu said that this situation is quite common among mobile phone users. Long-term, high-intensity eye use, especially staring at the mobile phone screen, can easily lead to the occurrence of esotropia. Among the patients who visit the outpatient clinic, this case occurs from time to time, and not only adults, but also children and adolescents. According to reports, acute common esotropia develops suddenly and is often accompanied by double vision symptoms. For patients with a small degree of esotropia, if the double vision interference is not great, conservative treatment can be taken first, such as using a low-degree prism for correction, and continuously observing the changes in the condition. However, for patients with a large degree of esotropia and conservative treatment is ineffective, it is necessary to wait for the symptoms to stabilize before taking surgical treatment. Dr. Wang Yanyu reminded the general public that whether adults or children, once double vision or strabismus symptoms occur, they should go to the hospital as soon as possible to avoid missing the best time for treatment. Strabismus not only affects appearance, but also damages visual function and even causes psychological abnormalities. Especially for children with strabismus, if not treated in time, it may seriously affect the normal development of visual function. People should also always pay attention to their eye health and avoid staring at mobile phone screens or books for a long time. It is recommended to correct bad eye habits immediately, such as staying up late to play with mobile phones in the dark, and looking at mobile phones while walking. |
