1. Recognize the signs of an epileptic seizure

Epileptic seizures usually have some precursor signals, and family members can take preventive measures if they can recognize these signals early. The patient may feel anxious, fearful, or experience dizziness, hallucinations, abnormal taste or smell, etc. These are early warning signals from the nervous system, indicating that epilepsy is about to occur. At this time, family members should closely observe the patient's condition and help him find a safe place to lie down as soon as possible to avoid sudden falls or collisions that may cause secondary injuries. During the prodromal stage, make sure there are no dangerous objects in the environment, such as sharp objects or furniture corners, to reduce the risk of possible injury. Staying calm and paying attention to the patient is the most important thing at this moment.

2. Do not move the patient drastically

During an epileptic seizure, the patient's body may experience violent convulsions and involuntary movements. During this process, family members should avoid moving the patient's body drastically or forcibly holding down the patient's body, as this may cause fractures or other serious injuries to the patient. The best way is to let the patient lie in a safe place and use soft objects (such as clothing or pillows) under the head to prevent head injuries. If the patient is already in a dangerous area (such as a high place or using a knife, etc.), you can gently help them stay away from danger, but never apply excessive force to avoid accidents. At the same time, pay attention to clearing dangerous objects around to ensure a safe environment for the patient.

3. It is strictly forbidden to feed water, food or medicine

During an epileptic seizure, the patient's airway may be blocked and the patient may even lose consciousness. In this state, feeding water, food or medicine may cause suffocation, which may be life-threatening in severe cases. Family members should strictly avoid such behavior. During an attack, do not try to put anything in the patient's mouth or forcefully pry open the patient's mouth, as this may cause damage to the patient's teeth or bite himself. The correct approach is to try to keep the patient's airway open, let the patient lie on his side to prevent oral secretions or vomit from blocking the airway, and wait patiently for the attack to end naturally.

4. Let the patient lie down and rest after the attack stops

Epileptic seizures usually last from a few seconds to a few minutes. If the seizure ends within 5 minutes, family members should help the patient lie flat on the spot and avoid immediately lifting or moving them. After the seizure, patients usually enter a state of fatigue, confusion or drowsiness, and they need adequate rest to restore their strength. Keep the patient in a quiet environment and ensure that the body is in a comfortable and safe position. If the patient's consciousness gradually becomes clear, give gentle comfort and company, but avoid stimulating language or actions. Closely observe the patient's recovery and contact a professional doctor for further evaluation if necessary.

Although epileptic seizures are worrying, family members can effectively reduce the harm of seizures to patients by mastering the correct first aid methods. Recognizing precursors, avoiding incorrect handling, prohibiting feeding, and taking adequate rest are key steps. We should remain calm and be familiar with these first aid measures so that we can provide help quickly and effectively at critical moments to ensure the safety of patients. Through these measures, epileptic patients can better cope with seizures and improve their quality of life.
