What should patients with dialysis who are constipated do? Here are 4 tips to help you deal with it!

01Adjust your diet

According to the Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Constipation, people with constipation are recommended to consume 25-35g of dietary fiber per day, and can eat more vegetables, fruits, beans and grains in moderation. Kidney patients on dialysis need to control water and potassium, and low-potassium fruits and vegetables such as okra, mung bean sprouts, zucchini, mulberries, apples, etc. are preferred .

Before eating, blanching can effectively reduce the potassium content in food, while increasing fiber intake, promoting intestinal peristalsis and improving constipation.

02Develop habits

Develop a habit of regular bowel movements , such as 15-20 minutes after breakfast, and squat for 10-15 minutes every day. Squatting is better than sitting, and you can step on a small stool when sitting to improve your posture. You need to concentrate on defecation and avoid distractions . No matter what the result is, you should persist. Generally, it takes about 3 months to develop a habit.

03Increase activities

Exercise can increase gastrointestinal motility and facilitate defecation. Dialysis patients should reduce sitting and lying time and increase exercise as much as their body allows. They can perform moderate-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a doctor, such as walking, jogging, cycling, and Tai Chi .

04Drug intervention

If constipation cannot be effectively relieved by the above methods, it is recommended that dialysis kidney patients with constipation choose appropriate laxatives for treatment under the guidance of a doctor , such as enema, lactulose, rhubarb tablets, etc., and use them in combination with gastrointestinal motility drugs when necessary.
