Since 2023, the Quanzhou Science and Technology Association has earnestly implemented Quanzhou's "Silver Age Science Popularization" campaign, focusing on the hot topics and needs of science popularization among the elderly, with "Elderly Health and Wellness", "Crossing the Digital Divide" and "Anti-Telecom Financial Fraud" as the main contents, helping the elderly to master basic scientific knowledge on health and wellness, smart technology and anti-fraud, so that they can better integrate into the modern smart society.

In order to further improve the health literacy, information literacy and digital skills of the elderly and allow the fruits of scientific and technological development to benefit the lives of the elderly, Quanzhou City's Office of the Leading Group for National Science Literacy, Quanzhou Association for Science and Technology, and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University jointly launched a popular science reader - "Talking about Health and Enjoyment in Health", focusing on advocating a civilized and healthy lifestyle, and focusing on popularizing health and wellness knowledge for the elderly, so that the elderly can better and more deeply understand and accept it, and continuously enhance the elderly's sense of gain, happiness, and security.

What is diabetes?

A disorder of carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism caused by absolute or relative insufficient insulin secretion and/or impaired insulin utilization, with hyperglycemia as the main sign.

What are the typical clinical manifestations of diabetes?

Increased appetite, increased drinking, increased urination, weight loss, itchy skin, hunger, blurred vision, and fatigue.

Dietary Guidelines for Diabetes

The staple food should be rationed, the amount of fruit should be limited, and the main sources of carbohydrates should be whole grains, various beans, vegetables, etc.;

✓Each meal should have vegetables, 500g per day, of which dark vegetables should account for more than half;

Consume milk and soy every day, eat fish, poultry, eggs and meat in moderation;

✓Reduce the intake of fatty meat, eat less smoked, baked, pickled and other processed meat products, and control the use of salt, sugar and oil;

✓Try to choose low-glycemic index fruits between meals. It is advisable to choose fruits with a lower glycemic index. Pay attention to arranging eating time reasonably and eat in moderation each time;

✓Drink plenty of boiled water, moderate amounts of weak tea or coffee, and avoid sugary drinks;

✓Pay attention to eating at regular times and in fixed amounts, chew food slowly and thoroughly, and it is recommended to develop the habit of eating vegetables first and staple food last.
