Author: Yao Mengna The First Affiliated Hospital of Qiqihar Medical College Reviewer: Qi Yi, deputy chief physician and associate professor of the First Affiliated Hospital of Qiqihar Medical College Fractures, as one of the common injuries in daily life, not only bring physical pain to patients, but also may affect their daily life and work. However, through scientific and systematic rehabilitation measures, most fracture patients can successfully recover and return to normal life. So what are the scientific and systematic rehabilitation measures? Today we will take a look at the "gorgeous transformation" process of fractures. Figure 1 Copyright image, no permission to reprint A fracture, in short, is a break in the continuity and integrity of a bone. Depending on the type and severity of the fracture, the healing process will vary. Fractures are usually divided into closed fractures, which simply means that the skin is not broken when the fracture occurs, and open fractures, which means that the broken bones pierce the skin and are connected to the outside world. In addition, fractures can be further subdivided according to their stability, location, and whether there is any accompanying tissue damage. 1. Three major stages of fracture rehabilitation But no matter what kind of fracture it is, fracture recovery is a complex and delicate process, which can be roughly divided into three main stages: fracture occurrence, fixation and healing. 1. Fracture stage When a fracture occurs, the patient will usually feel severe pain immediately, accompanied by swelling or bruising at the fracture site. The key to this stage is emergency treatment, including initial fixation of the fracture site, reducing bleeding, and sending the patient to a doctor for professional examination as soon as possible. The doctor will use X-rays to determine the type and location of the fracture, providing a basis for subsequent treatment. Figure 2 Copyright image, no permission to reprint Note: (1) Stay calm and avoid moving the injured part to avoid aggravating the injury. (2) Use ice packs to reduce swelling and pain. (3) For complex fractures, non-professionals should not handle them on their own and should seek medical attention as soon as possible. 2. Fracture fixation stage Fracture fixation is an important part of the rehabilitation process. Depending on the severity and type of fracture, the doctor may choose non-surgical fixation (such as plaster, splint) or surgical fixation (such as steel nails, plates, external fixators, etc.). The purpose of fracture fixation is to reconnect the fracture ends and maintain stability to create favorable conditions for healing. Figure 3 Copyright image, no permission to reprint Note: (1) Strictly follow the doctor's instructions and wear and use the fixation device correctly. (2) Keep the fixed area clean and dry to avoid infection. (3) Regular follow-up examinations should be performed to ensure that fracture fixation is effective. 3. Fracture healing stage Fracture healing is a long and complex process, which usually includes the stages of hematoma organization evolution, original callus formation, callus transformation and shaping. During this stage, patients need to actively cooperate with doctors in rehabilitation exercises to promote the recovery of fracture site functions such as muscle strength and joint flexibility. Rehabilitation exercise: Early rehabilitation exercises are mainly based on isometric muscle contraction, such as clenching fists and lifting legs, to promote blood circulation and prevent muscle atrophy. As the fracture heals, the range of motion of the joints and the intensity of strength training are gradually increased. Patients should follow a personalized exercise plan under the guidance of a rehabilitation therapist to avoid secondary injuries caused by excessive exercise. Figure 4 Copyright image, no permission to reprint Nutritional support: Patients need to ensure a balanced diet and take in enough calcium and protein to help bones heal and strengthen. Eat more foods rich in vitamin D or get some sun exposure to promote calcium absorption. At the same time, patients should avoid smoking and excessive drinking to avoid delaying the healing process of fractures. Pain management: Pain is one of the common symptoms during fracture recovery. The doctor will prescribe appropriate painkillers according to the patient's specific situation. Patients need to follow the doctor's instructions and take the medicine on time. They cannot increase or decrease the dose or stop taking the medicine on their own. Pain management also includes psychological adjustment and relaxation training, such as deep breathing and meditation, which can help relieve anxiety and pain. 2. Improve family rehabilitation and actively participate in social activities Family rehabilitation is an indispensable part of the fracture rehabilitation process. The company and support of family members can give patients great spiritual encouragement and motivation, which is conducive to accelerating the recovery process. At the same time, patients should also actively participate in social activities and maintain a good attitude. So what specifically does family rehabilitation and social support include? Home rehabilitation: First, create a safe and comfortable rehabilitation environment for patients to avoid potential hazards at home that may cause falls. Second, assist patients in training their daily self-care abilities, such as dressing, washing, etc. In addition, patients should be encouraged to participate in outdoor activities, such as walking, gardening, etc., but be careful to avoid strenuous exercise and collisions. Social activities: Patients can join fracture rehabilitation patient exchange groups or online communities to share experiences and insights with people with similar experiences. If psychological problems arise during the rehabilitation process, they should actively seek help from professional psychological counselors. If conditions permit, they can actively participate in rehabilitation knowledge lectures and training activities to improve their self-rehabilitation ability. In short, fracture rehabilitation is a process that requires patience, perseverance and professional guidance. By following doctor's advice, exercising scientifically, eating a balanced diet and actively adjusting their mindset, most patients can successfully recover and return to normal life. I wish every fracture patient can achieve a "gorgeous transformation" and put on a "Transformers" show! |
