Peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, how to choose? What is the difference?

Peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, how to choose? What is the difference?

1. Different principles:

Peritoneal dialysis uses the peritoneum as a semipermeable membrane to exchange solutes and water with the plasma components in the capillaries on the other side of the peritoneum through the dialysate infused into the peritoneal cavity.

Hemodialysis is the process of drawing blood out of the body and exchanging substances with dialysate through a dialyzer to remove metabolic waste and excess water from the body.

2. Operation method:

Peritoneal dialysis can be performed at home, with multiple fluid changes per day.

Hemodialysis requires patients to go to the hospital regularly and be operated by professional medical staff, usually 2 to 3 times a week.

3. Effects on the cardiovascular system:

Peritoneal dialysis has relatively little impact on the cardiovascular system, and blood pressure fluctuations are relatively stable.

During hemodialysis, the rapid changes in blood volume may have a significant impact on the cardiovascular system, such as blood pressure fluctuations and arrhythmias.

4. Freedom of life:

Peritoneal dialysis patients have relatively high freedom in life and can work and travel normally, but they need to pay attention to hygiene and operating standards.

Hemodialysis patients need to go for treatment regularly according to the hospital's arrangements, and their lives are subject to certain restrictions.

5. Nutritional loss:

Peritoneal dialysis may lead to a greater loss of nutrients such as protein.

Hemodialysis is relatively less common in this regard.

6. Fees:

In general, the cost of hemodialysis is relatively high, including the cost of dialysis equipment, consumables, and hospital treatment.

Peritoneal dialysis is relatively inexpensive, especially when done at home.

When choosing peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis, you need to consider many factors, including the patient's condition, lifestyle, financial situation, etc., and make the most suitable choice after fully communicating with your doctor.
