International Pharmaceutical News丨Oral inactivated vaccine for urinary tract infection? It’s true, but…

The vaccine to prevent " urinary tract infection " is out, spray "mouth" in (manual serious face) Urinary tract infection is one of the most common urinary system infections, and it affects women particularly seriously. About 40% to 60% of women experience at least one urinary tract infection in their lifetime, and one in four women are prone to recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI) .

Although urinary tract infections are usually treated with antibiotics, long-term use of antibiotics will lead to the risk of drug resistance, making these drugs less effective when used repeatedly. Therefore, vaccines are essential if we want to alleviate the problem of antibiotic resistance.

As an alternative, the researchers developed a whole-cell heat-killed vaccine called "MV140", which contains four inactivated bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, including:

① Escherichia coli (25%)

② Klebsiella pneumoniae (25%)

③ Proteus vulgaris (25%)

④ Enterococcus faecalis (25%)

The immunization procedure for this vaccine is relatively complicated. It needs to be sprayed under the tongue every day for three months. In this way, the antigen will pass through the soft mucosa in the mouth, stimulate the lymphatic tissue and produce an immune response.

The results of the study found that:

1. All volunteers participating in the study had a history of urinary tract infection, but none of them developed urinary tract infection during the "3-month" vaccination period;

2. After the full course of vaccination (one spray per day for 3 months), the volunteers remained infection-free for an average of 54.7 months;

3. More than half of the volunteers (54% of women and 53% of men) have not suffered from urinary tract infections in the "9 years" after completing the full vaccination.

In simple terms: spray for three months, protect for several years. If you are troubled by urinary tract infections, would you consider getting this vaccine?

One more thing to add: this vaccine is " pineapple flavored ", and there is no alternative if you don't like pineapple flavor.
