April 11th of each year is World Parkinson's Day. Parkinson's disease is a common neurodegenerative disease, and has now become the third largest risk factor affecting the health of the middle-aged and elderly after cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and tumors. Today I would like to talk to you about a topic: how to identify the early symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although a single sign may not be enough to cause concern, if you find yourself or your loved ones have multiple of the following symptoms, you may need to consider making an appointment with a doctor for further consultation. It may be difficult to determine whether you or your loved ones have Parkinson's disease (PD). However, some experts say that the risk of early Parkinson's disease can be determined by "buttoning". Buttoning method: Test how many buttons you can button within 15 seconds. If you can only button 2 or 3, it proves that the risk of Parkinson's disease is relatively high. The Parkinson's Disease Foundation recently introduced how to recognize the 10 most common early signs of Parkinson's disease. Here are the top 10 early signs that you may have the disease. The presence of any of these symptoms does not mean you should be worried, but if you have more than one symptom, you should consider making an appointment for a consultation with your doctor. #1 Tremor Have you noticed a slight tremor in your fingers, thumb, hand, or jaw? Tremors at rest are a common sign of early Parkinson's disease. What's normal: A tremor in your hands may be normal after exercise, when you're nervous, or when you're injured. Taking certain medications can also cause a tremor. #2 Handwriting becomes smaller Is your handwriting much smaller than it used to be? You may notice changes in the way you write on paper, such as smaller letter sizes and words being huddled together. Smaller handwriting could be a sign of Parkinson's disease, called micrographia. What's normal: As you age, your handwriting may change if you have stiffness in your hands or fingers, or poor eyesight. #3 Loss of smell Have you noticed that you have lost your sense of smell for certain foods? If you find that you have a harder time smelling foods like bananas, pickles, or licorice, you should talk to your doctor about Parkinson's disease. What's normal: A cold, flu, or nasal congestion may change your sense of smell, but it should return when you recover. #4 Difficulty sleeping Do you struggle in your bed or act out dreams during deep sleep? Sometimes your spouse notices or wants to move to a different bed. Sudden movements during sleep can be a symptom of Parkinson's disease. What's Normal: Everyone has nights when they "toss and turn" instead of sleeping soundly. Likewise, rapid body jerks at the onset of sleep or during lighter sleep are common and usually normal. #5 Difficulty moving or walking Do you feel stiffness in your body, arms, or legs? Have other people noticed that your arms don't swing as they used to when you walk? Sometimes stiffness goes away with some movement. If it doesn't, it could be a symptom of Parkinson's disease. Early signs may be stiffness or pain in the shoulders or hips. People sometimes say their feet feel like they're "glued to the floor." What's normal: If you injure your arm or shoulder, you may not be able to use it normally until it heals, or other conditions such as arthritis may cause the same symptoms. #6 Constipation Do you have difficulty passing a bowel movement without straining every day? Straining to pass a bowel movement may be an early symptom of Parkinson's disease and you should talk to your doctor. What's normal: If you don't get enough water or fiber in your diet, you may have problems with your bowel movements. Also, some medications, especially those for pain, can cause constipation. If there is no other cause, such as diet or medication, for your bowel problems, you should discuss this with your doctor. #7 Low or quiet voice Have other people told you that your voice is soft, or that you sound breathless and/or hoarse? If your voice has changed, you should see your doctor about possible Parkinson's disease. Sometimes you may think that other people are hearing worse, when in fact you are just speaking more softly. What's normal: A chest cold or other virus may cause your voice to sound different, but it should return to normal when you recover. #8 Lack of facial expressions Has anyone ever told you that your face has a serious, depressed, or angry expression even when you are in a good mood? This is often called facial rigidity. If so, you should ask your doctor about Parkinson's disease. What's normal: Certain medications may cause you to have that same stern or staring expression, but this should return to normal when you stop taking the medication. #9 Dizziness or fainting Have you noticed that you often feel dizzy when you stand up from a chair? Feeling dizzy or fainting can be a sign of low blood pressure, which may be related to Parkinson's disease. What's normal: Everyone experiences dizziness when standing up, but if it happens regularly you should see a doctor. #10 Stooping or hunching Are you not standing as upright as you used to? If you or a family member or friend notices that you seem to be hunched, leaning, or hunched when you stand, this could be a symptom of Parkinson's disease. Normal: If you have pain from an injury or illness, it may cause you to stand up straight. Also, bone problems may cause you to hunch over. Keep in mind that these symptoms do not necessarily mean Parkinson's disease, as each person's situation is unique. But if you or your loved one has multiple symptoms, it is best to consult a doctor in time to get the necessary tests. Early detection and early treatment can greatly improve the quality of life.
