Parents, please note! Incorrect pen-holding posture can easily lead to myopia in children

Many parents think that whether a child holds a pen correctly is a problem of their child's learning habits. However, a child in Wuhan was found to have a huge difference in vision between his two eyes during a checkup at the hospital last week, and the reason was closely related to his pen holding posture. Ophthalmologists remind that incorrect pen holding posture when reading and writing can easily lead to myopia in children or a rapid increase in myopia.

Bobo (pseudonym), 10 years old this year, had a checkup at the end of August last year. His right eye had 425 degrees of myopia, and his left eye had 400 degrees of myopia. Six months later, when he came for a follow-up checkup last weekend, Bobo's right eye had increased by 25 degrees of myopia, and his left eye had increased by 125 degrees of myopia. "Why did the left eye increase so much compared to the right eye? What's going on?" Bobo's mother was very surprised.

After ruling out eye diseases and genetic factors, Cai Chunyan, deputy chief physician of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, said that it might be caused by daily habits.

It turned out that when Bobo was writing, his right hand was very close to the pen tip, and the words were blocked by his hand as soon as they were written. In order to see the words on the paper, Bobo could only tilt his head and body to the left. After a while, both the person and the paper were tilted. "In this way, one of the child's eyes will be very close to the paper, causing a difference in refraction between the two eyes. Incorrect pen-holding posture is likely to be the cause of the child's eye refraction difference." Director Cai Chunyan said that in fact, this situation is particularly common among school-age children and teenagers. Primary and secondary school students are in a period of rapid growth and development, and over time, the development of the two eyes will be unbalanced.

Director Cai Chunyan reminded that children have weak self-control, and the formation of pen-holding habits requires the supervision of parents and teachers to help children correct their incorrect pen-holding postures in a timely manner. The pen tip should be kept one inch away, and there should be a gap between the thumb and index finger. If children are found to rub their eyes or have blurred vision, parents should take their children to the hospital for an eye examination as soon as possible, follow the doctor's advice, and scientifically prevent and control the development of myopia in children.
