The latest version of diabetes diagnosis and treatment standards: weight management is one of the keys to controlling sugar

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recently officially released the Diabetes Diagnosis and Treatment Standards (2024 Edition).

The new guidelines continue to emphasize that **weight management is one of the core elements of improving sugar metabolism . **How do you measure whether your weight is up to standard? The new guidelines point out that body mass index (BMI) should not be used as the only criterion for judging weight and body shape. Indicators such as waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio/waist-to-height ratio can also be evaluated, thus encouraging individualized assessment of BMI. Treatment of obesity should be individualized, and any method (whether lifestyle, diet, medication, etc.) can be used alone or in combination for obese diabetic patients.

Dietary principles for patients with prediabetes and diabetes are: reduce the intake of refined grains, minimize the intake of sugary drinks, candies, and processed foods, and recommend the intake of non-starchy vegetables, whole fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts/seeds, and low-fat dairy products.

Consider adopting a Mediterranean diet, which is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and long-chain fatty acids, such as fatty fish, beans, dairy products, nuts and seeds. Eat an average of more than 12 different types of food per day and more than 25 types per week, excluding cooking oils and seasonings. Actively participate in outdoor activities, have regular health checks, evaluate nutritional status, and maintain a suitable weight.
