Night Listening | Are animal organs a health killer? Not necessarily, these kinds are worth eating!

Some people on the Internet believe that offal contains toxins, high cholesterol and high fat, so it threatens health. In fact, this view is not accurate.

Although animal livers and kidneys help metabolize harmful ingredients such as drugs and heavy metals, they do not store them. Moreover, the national standard has limited requirements for harmful ingredients in fresh food. As long as the animal offal is purchased through formal channels and has passed quarantine, it can be eaten with confidence.

As for the concerns about cholesterol and fat content, they are not comprehensive. The fat content of most offal is only 5%, which is about the same as the fat content of milk. The fat content of the heart, kidney, intestines, and brain is higher, at 7%-12%. You may not have a clear idea of the percentage alone, so let's make a comparison. The average fat content of pork itself is 30.1%, which is much higher than the fat of animal offal. Moreover, the cholesterol content of most offal is less than one-seventh of that of egg yolk.

In general, many people's views on offal are not entirely correct. Animal offal is rich in high-quality protein, and the content of vitamins and trace elements is outstanding. The nutritional value is far beyond our imagination. But how much should we eat?

According to the recommendations of the Chinese Nutrition Society in the 2022 edition of the "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents", we can eat animal offal 2 to 3 times a month, but be careful not to eat too much each time.

Having said that, I believe you understand. Offal is not as scary as we think. As long as it is consumed scientifically, it is actually quite nutritious. That's all for today, see you next time.
