Many new mothers who have just given birth have reported that the episiotomy wound has cracked after delivery, and many knots are discharged from the vulva. The wound has healed, but there seems to be a hard thing inside the episiotomy wound. After several months, there are still knots of thread coming out of the vagina, and I feel like there is still a hard object inside the episiotomy wound that has not disappeared. What is the reason for this? Why is there a lump of flesh on the episiotomy wound during normal delivery?

This is normal. After the episiotomy wound heals, there are hard bumps to the touch. These are scar tissue left after the wound heals, or they may be caused by the absorbable sutures that have not been completely absorbed. The scars produced after episiotomy are mainly composed of fibroblasts. After a period of time, these fibroblasts will dissolve, digest and absorb, making the scar looser and smaller. If too many fibroblasts are produced, it will lead to excessive proliferation of scar tissue, making the wound scar thicker and protruding from the skin.

If the pregnant woman has a scar-prone physique, keloids will form on the wound, which will be painful when pressed lightly. You can see a doctor and use some topical medications for local application therapy under the guidance of the doctor to relieve keloid and discomfort symptoms. Just remember to clean it with warm water every day and prevent infection.
