Xiaoxue is the second solar term in winter, which usually falls on November 22-24 in the Gregorian calendar. In the north, after Xiaoxue, the weather will get colder and the rain will turn into snow. Since the ground is not cold yet, Xiaoxue is the main snow and it is difficult for snow to accumulate on the ground, so it is called "Xiaoxue". In the south, the cold air has come with great force, roaring across the mountains and ridges. The early morning of frost and the biting cold wind prepare a ceremony for the earth to mark the arrival of winter.

The meaning of the Minor Snow solar term The 24 solar terms are the product of the ancient farming era. It is a knowledge system formed by the ancient ancestors who understood the changing laws of seasons, climate, phenology, etc. in a year by observing the movement of celestial bodies. It plays an extremely important reference role in guiding agricultural production.

The ancients divided the four seasons according to the "Four Laws". Winter comes after the Beginning of Winter, so Xiaoxue is the second solar term in winter. When the sun reaches 240° of the ecliptic longitude, it enters the Xiaoxue solar term.

However, many young people now have misunderstandings about the Xiaoxue solar term, believing that it will snow lightly during the Xiaoxue solar term, and that it will snow heavily during the Daxue solar term. In other words, they equate the Xiaoxue solar term with the weather phenomenon of light snow. Is this really the case?

The Lesser Snow solar term is recorded in the Collection of Explanations of the 72 Seasonal Changes in the Lunar Calendar as follows: "In the middle of October, rain falls but is thinned by the cold, so it condenses into snow." This means that during this solar term, if it rains, it will condense into snow because it is relatively cold, but the cold is not strong enough at this time, so what falls is light snow, hence the name "Light Snow".

In fact, the meaning of the Xiaoxue solar term is different from the description of the size of snow in climate. Xiaoxue is a solar term that reflects precipitation and temperature. It is a solar term with a higher frequency of cold waves and strong cold air activities.

The arrival of the Minor Snow solar term means that the weather will become colder and the precipitation will increase. However, since the climate during this solar term is not too cold and the precipitation is not too heavy, the ancients used "Minor Snow" to describe the climate characteristics during this solar term.

There are also three signs during the Xiaoxue solar term: "The first sign is that rainbows disappear; the second sign is that the sky rises and the ground falls; the third sign is that winter comes." That is, after the Xiaoxue solar term, it is difficult to see rainbows because of the cold weather. The second sign, "the sky rises and the ground falls," reflects the ancient people's concept of yin and yang, and is also an understanding of the ancients on climate and life.

The next three phases of "seclusion into winter" mean that the weather becomes even colder, the birds and beasts disappear from the world, and the farmers begin to hide indoors and start hibernating.

1. Combine movement and stillness, and don’t sit for long periods of time

During the light snow season, the temperature drops, outdoor activities become less, and people spend more time indoors. In addition, sitting for long periods of time can easily slow down the body's metabolism and blood circulation, thereby causing physical discomfort.

At this time, you need to increase exercise to improve metabolism, promote blood circulation, enhance the body's ability to resist cold, and prevent seasonal colds.

2. Don’t overdo it

Although it is said that nourishing the body in winter will help you fight tigers in the coming year, you should also pay attention to a reasonable diet and balanced nutrition to prevent burdening the body and causing symptoms.

The principle of diet should be "nutritious and moderate". Meat, fruits and vegetables should be consumed according to one's own situation. Do not overeat or eat a single type of food, which can easily affect the body's absorption and metabolism.

3. Get enough sleep and don’t stay up late

Going to bed early can help the Yang energy and keep the body warm; getting up late can nourish the Yin energy, and when it is time to work at sunrise, you can avoid the cold and keep yourself warm, thus balancing the Yin and Yang.

Adequate sleep is beneficial for replenishing essence and qi, strengthening the spleen and stomach, and strengthening muscles and bones. Staying up late will damage kidney essence and reduce the body's immunity.

Prevent head from getting cold: The head is where all the yang meridians converge and is most vulnerable to wind and cold, so be sure to wear a hat.

Protect your chest and back: The chest and back are where the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are located. If these areas are exposed to cold, it can easily induce coronary heart disease.

Protect the waist and abdomen: Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the kidney is the foundation of the innate constitution, and the spleen is the foundation of the acquired constitution. Therefore, in winter, you should protect the waist and abdomen where the kidneys are located.
