"Left eye twitching means good fortune, right eye twitching means disaster"? What does eyelid twitching mean?

"Left eye twitching means good fortune, right eye twitching means disaster"? What does eyelid twitching mean?

"When the left eye twitches, good things are about to happen;"

"My right eye twitched, something bad is going to happen!"

What is the reason for eyelid twitching? Is it really so mysterious?

1. The principle of eyelid twitching

In terms of human anatomy, the eyelids are called "eyelids," and eyelid twitching is called eyelid tremor in ophthalmology.

There are two main muscles in our eyelids. One is called the orbicularis oculi , which is wheel-shaped and surrounds the eye. When it contracts, the eyelid closes.

Another muscle, the levator palpebrae superioris, contracts to open the eyelid. The constant contraction of these two muscles allows the eye to close or open normally.

However, once some force majeure factors occur, these two muscles will repeatedly contract, spasm or tremble, and you can clearly feel that your eyelids are twitching uncontrollably and it is difficult to control. This is the operating mechanism of frequent eyelid twitching.

2. Causes and treatments of eyelid twitching

Eyelid twitching can be divided into physiological and pathological types, of which the vast majority are physiological.

Physiological eyelid twitching is usually caused by excessive eye use, visual fatigue, excessive mental stress, etc., and is intermittent, short in duration, and weak in twitching.

This type of situation does not require treatment. When your eyelids twitch, you can gently pinch the eyelids with your index finger and thumb, and gently shake them a dozen times, and the eyelid twitching may stop.

Pathological eyelid twitching should be taken seriously:

1. Eye inflammation

When there is inflammation in the eyes, such as conjunctivitis, trichiasis, etc., it can also cause eyelid twitching, which may be accompanied by red eyes, itchy eyes, tears, etc. You should seek help from an ophthalmologist to improve eye discomfort in time.

2. Disease

Diseases such as Meige syndrome, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis may also cause eyelid twitching.

Or when the eyelid twitches, the facial muscles on the same side tremble, and the corners of the mouth twitch, etc., it is necessary to find out the "culprit" in time and go to the hospital for timely treatment.

3. 5 tips to relieve eyelid twitching

1. Do more blinking exercises;

(ii) Apply a hot towel to your eyes for 5-10 minutes;

(3) Massage and eye exercises;

(iv) Take good rest and avoid staying up late;

5. Eat a balanced diet and eat more foods containing vitamins, protein and calcium.
