Diabetics say it’s hard to control blood sugar in summer? Don’t take it lightly

In the hot summer, some diabetics reported that their blood sugar seemed to be a little lower than before, and the previously not ideal blood sugar was a little better. But many diabetics also complained that their blood sugar fluctuations increased and were not so easy to control. Let's take a look at what's going on~

Why are blood sugar levels lower in the summer?

1. Hot weather leads to less food intake

The weather is hot and humid in the summer, and people generally have poor appetite. They tend to eat more light foods and their intake of staple foods is also reduced, as if they were taking a low-sugar diet therapy.

2. High energy consumption

The weather is hot in the summer. Even if the amount of activity does not increase, the metabolism speeds up and the energy consumption is relatively large. This energy consumption is mainly in the form of heat, and the heat consumption mainly comes from blood sugar in the body.

3. Relatively increased insulin secretion

The human body's sensitivity to insulin increases in summer, and the amount of insulin secreted is higher than in other seasons. This is also an important reason for low blood sugar in summer.

How to stabilize blood sugar?

1. Drink water in time

The weather is hot and people sweat easily, which leads to a large loss of body water, so they should drink more water. Elderly diabetic patients often do not feel thirsty after losing water, so they should pay more attention to actively replenishing water (drinking about 2000 ml of water per day) to avoid thrombosis, hyperosmotic coma, renal dysfunction, etc. caused by blood concentration and viscosity.

2. Eat regularly and take medication as directed by your doctor

Pay attention to the regularity of diet and medication, and do not stop taking medication at will. In hot weather, people's appetite is often affected. If diabetic patients cannot eat and take medication regularly, and cannot monitor blood sugar in time, their blood sugar will fluctuate greatly.

3. Prevention of hypoglycemia

Summer is also the peak season for diabetics to suffer from hypoglycemia. When an attack occurs, symptoms include weakness, sweating, shivering, palpitations, pale complexion, dizziness, and confusion. Therefore, you can carry some sugary foods with you when going out to avoid greater damage to the body caused by hypoglycemia.

What else do diabetics need to pay attention to in summer?

1. Prevent infection

It is especially important for diabetic patients to take good care of their skin. If bitten by mosquitoes, avoid scratching. Dry your feet immediately after washing them to keep your skin dry and clean. Once the skin is damaged or infected, it must be treated promptly and seek medical attention if necessary.

2. Drug storage

Diabetic drugs should be stored in a cool and dry place. Insulin is best refrigerated in a refrigerator at 2~8℃. When needed, take it out and place it indoors to "warm up" first.

Please note: Do not freeze it in the refrigerator or expose it to direct sunlight.

3. Exercise appropriately, at the right time and in the right place

Diabetic patients should insist on exercising, but they should be careful about choosing the right time and place, and do it within their ability. They can choose to exercise outdoors when the temperature is relatively low in the morning and evening, and avoid strenuous exercise when the temperature is high at noon and the sun is directly shining. It is best to choose an air-conditioned room for indoor exercise. In addition, be careful not to exercise on an empty stomach in the morning.
