Beware! Can't walk after contracting H1N1? Doctors urgently warn that many people have been infected!

When children get the flu, parents are the most concerned.

Recently, the number of children with influenza A in hospital outpatient clinics in some places has increased, and a "strange" phenomenon has occurred in some children - some children have recovered from the influenza and no longer have fever, but suddenly have leg pain and are unable to walk . What's going on?

01

Many children experience leg pain after influenza A

Case 1: Yangyang, 6, from Shenzhen, Guangdong, started to cough on April 4, followed by a high fever, with the highest temperature reaching 39.6 degrees Celsius. More worryingly, Yangyang developed leg pain after the high fever and even limped. After examination, Yangyang was diagnosed with acute benign myositis in children .

Case 2: Recently, a 6-year-old girl in Foshan, Guangdong, began to limp after being diagnosed with influenza A. Immediately, her parents took her to the pediatric orthopedics department of the hospital for treatment. The examination results showed that the child's creatine kinase and creatine kinase isoenzyme indicators were 16 times higher than the normal value. Based on the medical history, clinical manifestations and examination results, she was finally diagnosed with viral myositis .

Case 3: Xiaoyue, 3, from Changsha, Hunan, was infected with influenza A a while ago. She had a high fever that lasted for a long time and was hospitalized for treatment. What Xiaoyue's parents didn't expect was that on the third day after the fever subsided, Xiaoyue suddenly complained of leg pain.

At first, Xiaoyue's parents didn't take it seriously, thinking that the child was too young and was just being spoiled after being sick. It wasn't until Xiaoyue refused to walk that they realized the seriousness of the problem. The hospital examination found that Xiaoyue's creatine kinase and myoglobin were more than ten times higher than normal, and she was diagnosed with acute benign myositis.

After examination, it was found that several indicators such as creatine kinase and creatine kinase isoenzyme of these children were significantly elevated, and they were diagnosed with childhood acute benign myositis .

It is the peak season of influenza A, and many children have developed fever and cold symptoms due to influenza A. Although the child has recovered from the influenza and no longer has a fever, he has developed sudden leg pain and is unable to walk.

In this regard, doctors remind: " If fixed symptoms of pain in both lower limbs appear 1 to 2 days after the fever of influenza A or B virus infection subsides, we should consider acute benign myositis. "

02

What is benign acute myositis in children?

Acute benign myositis in children is myositis that occurs in children during the course of influenza, also known as influenza myositis, viral myositis, post-influenza transient acute myositis, and acute transient myositis in children.

Acute benign myositis most often occurs after influenza A or B virus infection, manifested by obvious muscle pain and tenderness, mainly affecting the muscles of both lower limbs, with the calf muscles being the most common.

The disease often occurs when an acute infectious illness subsides, usually 24 to 48 hours after the symptoms of fever, cough, and runny nose subside. Children often refuse to walk or have difficulty walking because of pain or muscle weakness.

At the same time, the myalgia in this disease is different from that in influenza. The severe myalgia in acute benign myositis is limited to the bilateral calves, while the myalgia in influenza is widespread.

03

What should I do if I have acute benign myositis?

Doctors say that there is no need to panic when encountering acute benign myositis. As long as symptomatic treatment is given, most children will be able to recover within 3 to 10 days, and creatine kinase can return to normal levels within 3 weeks.

At the same time, parents can pay attention to the following 4 points in their children's diet :

▶ Eat small meals frequently, and eat low-salt, easily digestible foods, mainly foods rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins.

▶ Avoid spicy, stimulating and greasy foods.

▶ Drink less coffee, strong tea and other beverages that affect sleep quality.

▶ Drink more water and eat more alkaline foods to alkalize urine.

In addition, if the child is in the acute phase of childhood benign acute myositis, he or she should stop exercising, rest in bed, and then start exercising gradually after the symptoms subside.

Once again, we would like to remind all parents that children have poor resistance and are prone to various complications and critical illnesses after contracting the flu. If a child has symptoms such as high fever (around 40°C), convulsions, impaired consciousness, vomiting, headache, chest tightness, and precordial pain, the condition may deteriorate rapidly within a few hours and develop acute necrotizing encephalopathy, brainstem encephalitis, or fulminant myocarditis. Parents need to be vigilant and take the child to the hospital in time to avoid delaying the disease.
