Small stye, big trouble, pay attention to this common eye disease in spring!

The temperature difference is large and the climate is changeable in spring. Many viruses, bacteria and allergens begin to become active, and the eyes are no exception. They always feel swollen, red and hot... What is going on?

Spring is the peak season for styes, so pay attention to prevention. So what is a sty? How can we prevent it and protect our eyes? Let's learn about it today.

The scientific name of stye is hordeolum, which is commonly known as "stye". It is a common acute suppurative inflammation of the eyelid glands and eyelash follicles. The typical clinical symptoms of stye are redness, swelling, heat and pain in the eyelid. Some patients with poor infection control may also develop orbital cellulitis, resulting in more serious symptoms such as periorbital redness and swelling, conjunctival congestion and edema.

How to prevent styes in spring?
(1) Maintain eye hygiene and do not rub your eyes with dirty hands to avoid bringing bacteria into the eyes.
(2) Towels, pillowcases, bed sheets and other items should be washed and changed frequently.
(3) Limit the time spent on electronic screens, maintain a regular work and rest schedule, and avoid over-straining your eyes.
(4) Do not stay up late, get enough sleep, exercise moderately, and improve your body's immunity.

What should I do if I suddenly have a stye?

Generally speaking, stye develops rapidly. Cold compress can be applied when local redness and swelling are obvious in the early stage. When a nodule forms, local hot compress can be considered, 3-4 times a day, each time for 15 minutes. In the early stage of the disease, local frequent antibiotics combined with helium-neon laser irradiation can quickly relieve symptoms.

If the stye does not improve significantly after medication, and the local redness, swelling and pain of the eyelids become significantly worse, you need to come to the hospital in time to rule out orbital cellulitis. Most patients will get better within a week of medication, as evidenced by the disappearance of local redness, swelling and lumps, or inflammation-limited abscesses. At this time, coming to the hospital for drainage can also quickly cure it. Do not squeeze it yourself to avoid spreading inflammation.

Spring is the peak season for eye diseases. You should develop good eye hygiene habits, avoid staying up late for a long time, and avoid excessive fatigue. Once symptoms such as red eyes, pain, heat, and swelling occur, you can go to a specialist eyelid and orbital disease clinic in time.
