Rumor debunked! If you often wear contact lenses, you cannot have myopia surgery?

People who have worn contact lenses cannot undergo myopia surgery. What?!! Is it true?

Many friends who want to undergo myopia surgery have experienced the pain of wearing frame glasses and have also experienced the process of wearing contact lenses. However, because they did not do enough research before the operation, they often came to the hospital for examination wearing contact lenses, only to be told that they could not undergo preoperative examinations.

For myopia surgery, myopic people who usually wear corneal contact lenses need to stop wearing them until the cornea is in normal condition and the refractive state and corneal topography are stable before they can undergo preoperative examination. It is recommended to stop wearing soft spherical lenses for more than 1 week, soft astigmatism lenses and hard lenses for more than 3 weeks, and orthokeratology lenses for more than 3 months before surgery.

So listen carefully, it does not mean that you cannot undergo myopia surgery if you wear contact lenses; rather, you have to wait for a period of time after wearing contact lenses before you can undergo preoperative examination.

Wearing contact lenses

What impact does it have on myopia surgery?

Different types of contact lenses, due to their different materials, different curvatures and different degrees of matching with the corneal shape, will have different effects on the corneal tissue of our eyes, thereby affecting the accuracy of our preoperative examination data.

Secondly, corneal contact lenses can affect the morphology, quantity, and distribution of corneal epithelial cells to some extent. If corneal inflammation is caused by improper use of contact lenses, systematic treatment is required. After the inflammation is completely controlled, surgery can be performed after examination and confirmation.

Therefore, the purpose of stopping wearing contact lenses is to allow the corneal epithelial cells to return to normal, especially the damaged corneal epithelial cells to recover. Only after the cornea has fully recovered its original shape and function can the accuracy of the preoperative examination data of myopia surgery be guaranteed, thereby ensuring that surgical contraindications are accurately excluded and ensuring good visual effects after surgery.
