It turns out that children also have the trouble of paronychia. Does your nail groove hurt?

Science Fiction Network, January 18 (Xu Mingyang) Recently, Ms. Yang from Jinan, Shandong found that her 4-month-old child's toes were red and swollen. After consulting a doctor, she learned that it was paronychia. Ms. Yang said that she thought it was caused by the child's bump, but two days later, both feet were red and swollen. The nail groove is the groove between the nail (toe) and the flesh next to it. Paronychia is an inflammation of the nail groove and the surrounding tissues. When the skin around the nail is slightly injured due to excessive pruning, ingrown nails, biting, tearing of barbs, etc., the skin barrier is damaged and the resistance is reduced, which may cause infection by pathogenic microorganisms, the most common of which is bacterial infection.

The symptoms of paronychia are mainly redness, swelling, heat, pain, and suppuration in severe cases. According to different causes, paronychia can be divided into three types: suppurative paronychia, candidal paronychia, irritant or variant paronychia.

Purulent paronychia is caused by bacterial infection, of which Staphylococcus aureus is the most common. It is mainly manifested by suppuration of the periungual soft tissue. In severe cases, abscesses will form under the nail plate. Candidal paronychia is mostly caused by Candida albicans, which is manifested by redness and swelling of the nail groove, with a small amount of exudate but no suppuration. Irritant or mutagenic paronychia is caused by contact with irritants or mutagens, which causes redness and swelling of the nail groove and inflammatory changes.

When you start to feel uncomfortable, you can immediately disinfect the affected area repeatedly with iodine or other disinfectants, which may kill local pathogens. Expose the nail groove to avoid contact and squeezing with shoes, which may aggravate inflammation. If it is not treated in time and the symptoms become serious, you need to go to the hospital for treatment.
