Careful maintenance still makes you look old? It may be this eye disease

To avoid the knife of time

"Girls" take good care of their skin every day

Eye cream and essence are also one step

But the effect was not satisfactory...

Eyelids droop down and eyes can never open wide

Why do we still look old despite taking good care of ourselves?

I spent a lot of money on many "big-name" eye creams, and insisted on going to bed early and not staying up late, but when I looked at myself in the mirror, my eyes were still dull and I couldn't open them, and I often looked tired. This may not be due to inadequate maintenance, but may be caused by ptosis.

Dr. Lu Xiulan, associate chief physician, assistant director of the Eyelid and Orbital Disease/Ocular Plastic Surgery Department of Wuhan University Aier Eye Hospital , said that ptosis refers to partial or complete drooping of the upper eyelid, which can cover part of the cornea in mild cases and completely cover the cornea in severe cases. In fact, ptosis is very common, and it manifests in dull eyes and asymmetry. People with ptosis will give people a listless feeling even if they have large eyes.

Why does ptosis occur?

Congenital developmental causes

Some children are born with upper eyelid muscle dysfunction or congenital small eyelid fissure syndrome, which is mostly autosomal dominant inheritance. The eyelids cannot open wide, accompanied by amblyopia or strabismus.

Acquired causes

◾Trauma: directly causing rupture of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle or nerve paralysis.

◾Eye disease: Long-term excessive eyelid swelling due to eyelid inflammation or allergies or excessive rubbing of the eyes, damage to the levator palpebrae superioris aponeurosis, excessive stretching, loss of elasticity or thinning, causing ptosis.

◾ Myogenic ptosis: Myasthenia gravis is a common type of myogenic ptosis. The initial manifestation is ptosis, which can be unilateral or bilateral and may be accompanied by extraocular muscle movement disorders.

◾ Senile ptosis: With age, the levator palpebrae superioris muscle changes, the aponeurosis is overstretched and loses its elasticity, and the eyelids droop.

The dangers of ptosis

◾Limits vision and affects vision

When sleeping, the eyelids cover the eyeballs, which we call "resting". But if the eyeballs are always covered by drooping eyelids, especially if the ptosis is severe, the eyes cannot receive stimulation, which will affect the development of vision. People with ptosis always turn their eyes downward when looking at things. Over time, the eyeball muscles will atrophy, and even cause astigmatism, amblyopia, etc.

◾Looking up to see things can cause spinal deformity

If the upper eyelids of both eyes droop, you will instinctively look up or raise your eyebrows to look at things. If this continues for a long time, it will be very detrimental to the development of the cervical spine and will cause deformation, hunchback, etc.

◾Aggravate the fatigue of muscles around the eyes and cause visual fatigue

People with ptosis need more strength to support their eyes when they open, which can easily cause fatigue and spasm of various muscles around the eyes, thereby aggravating eye fatigue.

◾Affects appearance and is detrimental to mental health

Ptosis may cause asymmetry of the eyes and difficulty in opening the eyes. Children in particular may become introverted and feel inferior when they find themselves different from other children, which can affect their physical and mental health.

Tu Huifang, chief physician and director of the Department of Eyelid and Orbital Disease/Ocular Plastic Surgery at the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University , reminds that ptosis is not only a cosmetic issue. Therefore, if symptoms such as difficulty opening the eyes and visual fatigue occur, you can go to the ptosis and repair clinic of the Department of Eyelid and Orbital Disease/Ocular Plastic Surgery of the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University in time for examination to avoid irreparable damage due to delay.

At present, the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University (Wuhan Aier Eye Hospital) has opened 30 ophthalmology clinics, including dry eye clinic, high myopia clinic, floaters clinic, maculopathy clinic, diabetic eye disease clinic, pediatric tear duct clinic, ptosis and repair clinic, myopia prevention and control clinic, and refractory glaucoma clinic, implementing precision medicine and specialized treatment for specialized diseases. The hospital also has a special clinic for famous doctors, and invites nationally renowned ophthalmologists to sit regularly to provide diagnosis and treatment solutions for patients with difficult eye diseases. Weekend expert clinics and night clinics are also "open all the time" to fully guarantee the medical needs of the majority of patients.
