It’s cold and dry in winter. Can I have myopia surgery?

Winter is cold and the air is dry

Many friends are worried about the impact on myopia surgery

So are these concerns necessary?

What else should you pay attention to before myopia surgery?

"Doctor, can I have myopia surgery in winter?" Yangyang (pseudonym) asked. Winter is cold, and the temperature difference between indoor and outdoor is large. Once the ambient temperature changes too much, the lenses will always have steam, which will greatly affect the field of vision. Wearing contact lenses for a long time will make the eyes very dry. In order to get rid of these troubles, Yangyang, who has been myopic for many years, wanted to take off his glasses, but he was worried that the cold weather and dry air would affect myopia surgery, so he came to the Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University for consultation.

I believe many friends have similar worries and questions. Let’s see what the doctor says.

Wang Qifeng, deputy chief physician, member of the Refractive Group of Aier Eye Hospital Group in Hubei Province, and refractive specialist of Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, said: Myopia surgery has no special requirements for the season. The timing and effect of myopia surgery have nothing to do with the season. Because the operation is performed in a dust-free and sterile laminar flow operating room with constant temperature, humidity and indoor pressure, it is not affected by the outdoor temperature. Therefore, even in winter, as long as the preoperative examination results are met and there is a need to remove glasses, myopia surgery can be performed in winter.

Can myopia surgery be performed at any time?

Things to know before myopia surgery: stop wearing soft contact lenses for one week, stop wearing hard contact lenses (RGP astigmatism lenses) for three weeks, and stop wearing orthokeratology lenses for more than three months; please use eye drops as prescribed by your doctor before surgery; avoid catching a cold on the day of surgery; please wash your hair and take a shower the day before surgery, and do not wear makeup on the day of surgery; go to the toilet in advance on the day of surgery to avoid inconvenience during surgery.

How to choose the surgical procedure for myopia?

There are two common types of myopia surgery: laser and ICL.

Laser surgery for myopia corrects refractive errors by cutting the cornea and changing the corneal refraction.

ICL surgery implants a soft artificial lens into the human eyeball through a minimally invasive incision. This special contact lens can correct vision.

Why do some people want to do laser surgery, but after an eye examination, they can only do ICL? That's because before myopia surgery, a systematic examination is required for screening. According to the comprehensive examination results, the surgical indications and contraindications are strictly grasped to determine whether the eyes can be operated on. After meeting the surgical conditions, the appropriate surgical method can be selected. Therefore, myopia surgery is not something that everyone can do.

Who is suitable for myopia surgery?

Laser myopia surgery requires cutting of the cornea, so there are certain requirements for corneal thickness and corneal morphology. The higher the degree of myopia, the more cornea needs to be cut. In addition, the normal corneal morphology must be maintained and the remaining corneal thickness must be within a sufficiently safe range.

Lens implant myopia surgery can overcome the limitations of corneal thickness and corneal morphology. If the conditions are met, myopia within 50 degrees to 1800 degrees can be corrected through this surgery to regain clear naked eye vision. Because the degree of myopia that can be corrected is higher, people with high myopia and super high myopia choose this surgery more often.

Zhang Qingsong, deputy chief physician, head of the refractive group of Aier Eye Hospital Group in Hubei Province, and director of the refractive department of Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University, reminds that myopia surgery is not for everyone. Only after a detailed preoperative examination and evaluation can you know whether you meet the conditions for surgery and which myopia surgery is suitable for you. Patients can go to the refractive surgery clinic of the refractive department of Aier Eye Hospital affiliated to Wuhan University to choose the appropriate solution.
