Pew: Teens, Social Media, and Technology Report 2024

According to a Pew Research Center study, American teens continue to have widespread access to a variety of devices, with nearly half of teens (46%) using the internet “almost constantly.” For example, 95% of teens aged 13 to 17 surveyed late last year reported owning a smartphone or having access to one at home.

This proportion has not changed compared to the previous year, and smartphone penetration is almost 100% (98%) among teenagers aged 15 to 17, and is also very high among teenagers aged 13 to 14 (90%).

Desktop or laptop computer ownership is higher among older teens (91%) than younger teens (85%), and overall 88% of respondents use these devices at home.

Meanwhile, the prevalence of game consoles does not differ among teens of different ages, with 83% of teens reporting owning a game console. Boys are particularly prominent in the ownership of game consoles, with 90% of boys reporting having a game console at home, compared to about three-quarters (76%) of girls. According to another Pew study released last year, 61% of teenage boys play video games every day, compared to 22% of girls.

Additionally, 70% of teens report having a tablet computer at home, up from 65% at the end of 2023. That number is even higher among teens whose families make at least $75,000 per year (73%), compared with 64% for those whose families make less than that.

Household income level was also associated with computer/laptop ownership. In the highest-income households ($75,000+), computer or laptop ownership was almost universal (93%), compared with less than 80% (79%) for teens in households with annual incomes less than $30,000.
