Canalys: Global smartphone shipments to reach 1.22 billion units in 2024, up 7% year-on-year

Market research firm Canalys released data on global smartphone market shipments in 2024, which showed a full-year growth of 7% to 1.22 billion units, a rebound after two consecutive years of decline. In 2024, iPhone shipments fell 1% to 225.9 million units. Apple successfully offset the challenges in the Chinese mainland market with growth in emerging markets and stable performance in North America and Europe, and maintained the top spot in the market for the second consecutive year.

Samsung followed closely behind, with shipments also falling 1% to 222.9 million units. Xiaomi remained in third place and became the largest contributor to the industry's shipment growth in 2024.

Canalys said Xiaomi's shipments grew 15% to 168.6 million units, driven by strong momentum in the Chinese mainland market and continued strategic expansion in emerging markets.

Transsion, known as the "King of African Mobile Phones", ranked fourth for the first time, and OPPO (including OnePlus) ranked fifth, with sales increasing by 15% and 3% to 106.7 million and 103.6 million units respectively.

Canalys analysts said: "Driven by high demand for flagship phones, Apple and Samsung remain resilient, reflecting the continued premiumization trend in the market. In the high-end market, consumers are increasingly inclined to choose high-end versions in flagship series, thanks to manufacturers providing clearer product differentiation in flagship series, and this market itself is less price sensitive.

Taking Apple as an example, the shipment volume of iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max in 2024 will be 11% higher than that of iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in 2023, reaching more than 55 million units.

The strong performance of Pro models became the key factor in the iPhone 16 series surpassing the performance of the iPhone 15 series in its first year.
