OpenAI: ChatGPT has exceeded 100 million weekly active users since March 2023

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced at its first developer conference that 100 million people use ChatGPT each week. Since releasing ChatGPT and the Whisper model via an API in March, the company now has more than 2 million developers, including more than 92% of the Fortune 500.

Along with the data release, OpenAI also detailed a host of new features, including a platform for building customized versions of ChatGPT to help with specific tasks, and GPT-4 Turbo, a new model that learns about world events until April 2023 and can accommodate the equivalent of more than 300 pages of text in a single prompt.

ChatGPT is widely considered the fastest-growing consumer internet app of all time after launching nearly a year ago, reaching about 100 million monthly active users in just two months. For example, it took Facebook about four and a half years to reach 100 million users after launching in 2004, Twitter more than five years, and Instagram a little over two years.

Microsoft said its Bing search engine, which added generative AI features powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 earlier this year, passed the 100 million daily active user milestone in March, more than a decade after its launch in 2009. ChatGPT’s record was surpassed by Meta’s Threads, which amassed 100 million users less than a week after its launch in July, but Threads’ usage appears to have declined in the months since, with monthly active users just below 100 million as of October.

Whichever way you look at it, ChatGPT remains incredibly popular and hasn’t even celebrated its first birthday as a public service.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen huge numbers associated with OpenAI’s chatbot. Back in February, Similarweb estimated that the tool had reached a milestone of 100 million unique visitors a month and 25 million visitors a day. But what’s notable about today’s announcement is that it’s OpenAI’s own official data, rather than a third-party estimate.

Recent media reports have said that ChatGPT has begun to decline in popularity since its release in November last year.
