Canalys: Xiaomi ranks third in Africa's smartphone market in Q2 2024, up 6% year-on-year

According to recent news, the latest report from market analysis firm Canalys shows that in the second quarter of 2024, the African smartphone market grew slightly, a year-on-year increase of 6% to 17.8 million units.

Transsion continued to dominate with a 51% market share, but was affected by the market slowdown, with a growth rate of only 1% and shipments of 9.2 million units.

Samsung's shipments fell 25% year-on-year to 3.3 million units due to a weakening focus on entry-level models, ranking second on the list with a 19% market share.

Xiaomi, in sharp contrast, grew 45% against the trend, with shipments reaching 2.1 million units and a market share of 12%, setting a record for market share in the region.

Although Realme only has a 5% market share in the region, it has shown an astonishing growth of 137% , with shipments of 900,000 units, ranking fourth on the list.

OPPO's expanded product line through the Reno series and its focus on innovation have been well received by consumers, achieving a year-on-year growth of 39% , with shipments of 800,000 units and a market share of 4%, ranking fifth.

Canalys senior analyst Manish Pravinkumar said: Although the African smartphone market is growing rapidly, feature phones still account for 52% of the market share, and there are still many opportunities for expansion in smartphones.

Addressing broader challenges such as consumers’ willingness to pay, digital literacy, high taxes on devices and currency volatility will be critical to unlocking the full potential of smartphone adoption in Africa.
