ANALYSIS GROUP: 2022 Global App Store Ecosystem Report

The App Store ecosystem facilitated $1.1 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2022, further demonstrating developers’ strong, resilient track record of growth. The App Store continues to create incredible opportunities for developers around the world, with over 90% of billings and sales going solely to developers and businesses of all sizes, without any commissions paid to Apple. Additionally, new analysis from the Progressive Policy Institute found that the iOS app economy now supports over 4.8 million jobs in the U.S. and Europe, approximately 2.4 million in each region.

In 2022, App Store developers generated $910 billion in total fees and sales from the sale of physical goods and services, $109 billion from in-app advertising, and $104 billion from digital goods and services.

The research revealed key drivers behind the growth of the App Store ecosystem, including a rebound in demand in industries such as travel and ride-hailing, and strong growth in advertising spending in social media and retail apps.

Developer billings and sales grew 27% from 2019 to 2020, 27% from 2020 to 2021, and 29% from 2021 to 2022. Small developers in particular have seen great success on the App Store, with revenue growth rates outpacing large developers by 71% between 2020 and 2022.

Overall, U.S. developer billings and sales have increased by more than 80% since 2019. In Europe, developer billings and sales have increased by an above-average 116% since 2019.
