Google's Android operating system is now running on 3 billion active devices, the company announced today at its virtual I/O 2021 developer conference. In a briefing ahead of today's event, the company also noted that there were 250 million active tablets running Android last year, a number that may be larger than some expected, but which explains Google's increased focus on these large-screen devices at I/O this year. Google traditionally shares new device stats at its I/O conference, but since it canceled the event last year, we didn't get an update for 2020. The most recent number Google provided was 2.5 billion active devices in May 2019, which is up from 2 billion in 2017, so at least for now, this growth rate of about 500 million devices every two years remains stable. By comparison, Apple announced in January that it had an installed base of 1 billion iPhones and that there are now 1.65 billion total active devices in its ecosystem, up from 1.5 billion a year ago (that last number includes all active Apple devices). As of the time of writing, Google is introducing content about Android 12. If you want to be the first to know the developments of this most popular mobile operating system, please stay tuned.
